Thread: The top 100 games of TNL *temporarily on hold*

  1. I may have missed them, but it appears that

    Grandia (saturn)
    Half-Life (pc) !!!
    Metal Slug 3 (or series)

    were neglected.

I represented the adventure genre with The Longest Journey.

As for the guy complaining about DC Bangai-O getting the nod over the N64 version... I've only played the DC version but from what I've read about the N64 one, you have to collect the fruit to charge your special instead of just blowing stuff up. This leads me to believe the ultra-frantic pacing that I loved about the DC version isn't present in the N64 one and since I had no problem with the DC pad's controls I do believe I'd still like the DC version better even if I had played the N64 one.

And yes, Saturn Grandia does indeed need to be up there.

  3. One good way to do this would be to compile a list 200-300 (or more?) titles via a nomination format or something. Input all the titles into an excel doc and post it to download.
Each TNL individual who would like to participate could then rank each title on the list using a scale of 1-10 at 0.5 or 1.o intervals (non-played games would get a null vote). The doc could be sent to an individual to compile (I could do this). As long as each indivial filled out the form correctly the scores could easily be copied into the master excel doc and a mean average for every title could be derived and then sorted from highest to lowest, give us the ulimate TNL top 100 list.
    Any thoughts?

That's actually a really good idea. It would probably be a lot closer list then we would get doing it this way. As long as everyone was honest in their grading. Do we have someone who is good enough at Excel that would be up for it?

Also, maybe we should just do the list, and then have everyone add numbers to it as to where they would rank it in the list. It would take some time, but I would be willing to give it a go.

To be fully honest I think the only rule in effect is that you shouldn't be able to veto more titles than you suggest/support for this thread.

Otherwise, I really don't give a damn what rank the titles show up as long as the games I want vetoed are the fuck off of the list.

  6. I could put together the excel sheet. What I could do is create a core list using the EGM and GI lists of the past adding TNL favorites (games like Ikaruga, LB2 and the such), from that point we could allow each person to nominate up to 3 additional titles that would like to see contend for the list.

    Let me know.

I don't understand how having 10 people want a title on the list, and because one person doesn't, means that it shouldn't be on the list.

Actually, what would be even better would be to have every person who wants to participate rank their top 50, from a list or not (you dont necessarilly need a 200-300 long nomination list). First place gets 100 points, second place gets 75 points, third place gets 60 points, fourth place gets 50, and then it goes down from there (fifth gets 49, sixth gets 48, fifthieth gets 3 or whatever). Then, you take out all the games that only appeared on one list (a game needs to be on at least 2 lists to make the top 100).

Then, you add up their numbers, and... HOLLA! Top 100 list.

Youd probably need a program to count everything up, but thats what shit like Perl was made for. With all the eggheads on this site I dont think that would be too much of a problem.

Thats more or less the same method that Rolling Stone used to make their top 500, and it turned out as decent as youd expect, though there was way too many Beatles albums near the top.

If you guys want to use this method tell me and Ill look up RS's exact numbers and shit to ensure you use a good system.

  9. That list's not too bad thus far, but I'd like to add a few noticeable omissions.

    Ghosts 'N Goblins (Arcade)
One of the all time best 2D platformers.

    Super Monkey Ball (GC)
It captured the beauty of old school game design and is still the best game on the Gamecube.

    Unreal Tournament (PC)
Took online FPS to the next level back in 1999 and still remains relevant to this day.

  10. dif, I do believe that is the best system. The idea I came up with was just to ease compulation, but given I can't imagine more than 100 particiates, I sure it wouldn't take too long. The problem is coming up with a point system that would be statistically acurate. That is another reason I though about the idea of ranking each title. That is the only way I could see guaranteeing agreement on each titles positioning.
