Thread: starting to play guitar seriously

  1. I use the heaviest string gauge I can. I beat the shit out of them. Last year, I broke my A string and G string (omfglol), but aside from that they tend to stay put.

I now have something to work for.

So what strings do everyone use? I've been all over the place, right now I'm using D'Addario Half-Round 13s for jazz and some DR 10s or something on my Strat... which desperately need to be changed, and for acoustic I have medium light Elixers just so I barely ever have to change them.

  3. My guitar came with Elixirs and Im gonna keep using them... I have a spare box.

  4. Jesus, its been so long since I've changed them I can't even remember (I neglect my current bass).

I'm not really fussed by strings that much. New bass strings sound too clangy when you get them to begin with, so I like to dirty them up a bit.

I use D'Addario... because they are by far the most durable strings in the world.

I used to use GHS Guitar Boomers, until I realized how much they suck.

  6. Elixirs rock.

  7. How's everybody doing with the guitar?

I've been practicing a ton lately, memorizing tunes, trying to transcribe more, and just booming as far as my progress. In the BCC Jazz Band we're playing a song at 310 bpm. I don't use an amp for that chart so I have to play hard as hell and I've been tearing holes in my picking hand, I'm also getting a whole new set of calluses on my fretting hand.

I've been playing like shit recently. But no one seems to notice.

  9. Im still progressing but right now Im mainly just doing mind-numbing repetition over and over of scales and chord progressions and stuff just to try to get the muscle memory working. Ive also spent time practicing with a metronome and Im really bad with it.

Talk to me in 2 or 3 weeks and hopefully I will have gotten better. Im practicing like 1-2 hours a day, which is slightly less than I wanted but its still 15-18 hours a week, which isn't too shabby.

I picked up the White Stripes song book I bought in December today and I started learning I Just Dont Know What To Do With Myself. A lot of these songs would actually be pretty good for me to learn, because they are moderately easy but have some rough spots that I would do well to learn and they sound good (Ball and Biscuit has a cool solo) and I like singing them.

  10. I've just started myself, i'm quite burnt out on games and Japan so it seemed like a good idea to take up something i've wanted to do for years. I have an acoustic and it's very nice These are the songs I want to eventually be able to play, these are my targets, motivation and inspiration;

    1. David Bowie - Ziggy Stardust
    2. Pink Floyd - Dogs
    3. Air - Mike Mills

Two of my housemates play the guitar (one has a drumkit in his room) so i'm in good hands. I'm quite excited about this, I can't stop looking up resources online and just generally getting a feel for my guitar.
