But again, Kroenen did try his blade tricks on HB, but with Right Hand of Doom, and being very pissed off, HB simply brushed him off. Sure, they could have climactic fight and it would have been cool, but as I said, Kroenen while cool, still not that strong opponent to HB, as Saamael was.

Check Ebay, and Amazon for some deals on HB books. Seeds of Destruction is harder to come by, since its an older book, but there should still be some decent deals.

It's been reprinted, they all have. Borders, B&N, Walden, all the major bookstores have been flooded with them, and get this: they keep selling. Awesome. This movie has been having the dual effect of making new fans and pleasing current ones. I am quite satisfied with this arrangement.

Yes, I understand how he stopped his blades. Please stop explaining it to me as if I do not understand. My point is that they spent a lot of time building Kroenen up for no reason.

Hellboy killed like 30 of Saamaal and they built Kronen up to be a stealthy killer of extreme talent. This is time they spent building Kroenen for no reason. His blades didn't work on Hellboy and he was basically a pushover. Every enemy in this movie was for him besides Saamaal. The way he dispatched those security guards made Kroenen look formidable. So why bother? There was no reason to build him up so much and then not have a climactic duel between the two. Kroenen and Rasputin fell flat because of the short cut off endings to them. It didn't seem like they threatened the world very much.

And, everyone, for future reference, it's spelled "Samael."

I was talking to someone about this today, and we came to the conclusion that there were probably a lot of rewrites of Hellboy, and a lot of things got mashed together as a result of differing ideas. I mean, the whole character of Myers... I felt like I was supposed to like him more than I did, but I never had the chance. It felt like maybe in an earlier draft he was overwritten, but his role was left somewhere between big and small. And then you have to factor in the amount of storylines they condensed. You have the death of Bruttenholm sans frogmen, the origin of Hellboy, Rasputin and co. showing up and being done away with in one swoop, an all-new villain for the movie, the Hellboy/Liz love story subplot, a couple opportunities to give Abe Sapien new powers, nevermind some exploring of Liz's powers, and... yeah. They crammed a ton of shit into this movie, and I'm really glad they found a way to work the Corpse in, anyway, even if they did make him Russian, heheh. Rasputin might have needed some more time. I felt for someone who didn't know the comics, the whole Anung Un Rama business might have been confusing... and I was kind of upset there was no crown floating over his head, heheh. Rasputin making lots of promises that he is the only one who can show Hellboy what he really is long before that happening builds up to it... and we don't get that in the movie. And, well... Kroenen. The Kroenen in the movie is not the Kroenen from the comic books. I still don't know where this crazy clockwork ninjanazi business came from, but I don't think it's bad... I just liked him better when, you know, he was a dude. With a helmet. Who talked and stuff. I felt like he could have been a lot more interesting than he was and argh. It's too late for this. Time to finish my paper and get some sleep.

  6. Ya wasn't the original corpse Irish or Scotish? I didn't see a point. They just kind of threw it in there, and although cool, made the movie drag on a little bit in that area. I mean, what was that device Hellboy used? That was definitely a bat belt moment.

Rasputin definitely needed more time and should have used more of his powers. I realize that he's more of a manipulator than a fighter, but his puppet, Kroenen, was a pushover anyway. The only good fight we got was Hellboy disposing of two Sammaels where they're all killed in one foul swoop anyway. And technically, a double amount of Sammaels should have spawned out. They never explained why their souls didn't split up in to two like the last couple of times they were killed.

Meyers was supposed to be our ticket in to understanding this wasn't normal. His reaction should've been ours. And it was up and until the whole Liz storyline. Instead of helping Hellboy, who we like, he tries to go out with Liz, a psyche patient he monitors, afterall. It's creepy.

Raputin should've tempted Hellboy in a dream and another method, like when he was fighting he should've whispered in his ear. A good time to do that was when the subway collapsed on him. Just something like: "Is this what you're fighting for?". Hellboy moves his eye over to see who said that and nobody's there.

Kroenen was cool. I don't know a lot about him but they did a great job of building him up. He killed tons of soldiers, Hellboys dad, Hellboys partner/agent, and tons of guards at the museam (armed guards in a museam?). You'd think he'd atleast give some of that to Hellboy before making him angry.

EDIT: He also killed the tour guide.

Looks like Hellboy topped the box office with 23.3 million, ruining The Rocks streak of opening in 1st place. Someones streak was on the line though. Comic book inspired movies always open #1 when opening and The Rock has, thus far, opened at #1. Hellboy vs. The Rock last weekend. I saw both so I don't count.

  7. Meyers was a useless character. The movie could have been done just as well if we would have followed Prof. Broom into the B.P.R.D. It would have been effortless to have Liz reintegrate into the organization, and it would have spared me the crap between him and her. I really would have missed the scene with the 9 year old, but them's the breaks.

And, Grave, as far as I could tell, HB did, in fact, have the crown. It may have been a bit difficult to see in that tongue of fire, though.

  8. He was useless until the end. You needed him for the ending.

Hellboy had the Flame crown in both Appocalypse, and Right Hand of Doom scenes.

I didnt mind the date/cofee scene with HB, Liz and Meyers. It was pretty funny to see HB acting goofy on the rooftops, and the stone throwing scene was great.

HB has plenty of Bat Belt moments. Thats why he HAS his belt full of charms, amulets, grenades, flares and all other kinds of items, to help him out in his battles and investigations. That was true to the book. And I dont mind corpse to be Russian. There were in Russia at the moment, so where would they find Irish corpse?

Again, Rasputin and his Nazi group had more explanation and backstory in the novels, and even in Seeds of Destruction they didnt had much exposure and were explored more in future volumes, and since HB movie is mostly based on SOD, they tried to put alot of backstory and explanation in, and just didnt had enough time for all the characters.

Yep, Thats my feeling about Meyers as well. He was supposed to be a normal one among the "freaks", so the audience can associate themselves with him, and he could provide the narration.

Kroenen had the highest bodycount in the film, even beating Sammaels Again, as I said before, here he got MUCH more to do than he ever did in the book. I know where you coming from Andrew, and I too would have loved to see a much more intricate and kickass fight between him and HB, but I guess Del Toro decided to get it over with fast.

Yeah, I hope it brings more money in, since there are nothing really important opening this week. So HB will have time until 16th to gather some more money. But I sadly dont see it be number 1 this week, even with crap thats coming out.

  10. The stone throw was the funniest thing in the movie.
