Great review, couldn't have said it better myself... at one point I owned nearly every PC Engine game, and Drac X is still tops among approximately 700 games for the system. And yes it is well worth the money!
I could torrent a good rip(w/music) if anyone is interested. I've only had the chance to play the 1st stage, but it's making me want to kick myself in the ass for selling my Duo.

Doubt anyone cares, but this dude has a patch out that translates the stage names and the intro cinema (As much as would fit).

That's pretty awesome, I may try it out later.
EDIT: I see it's based on the Yo Kosiman translation. I think the intro in that translation was from the instruction booklet's introduction, which is slightly different because it is not written from the perspective of Dracula's minions. You can hear that in the German voiceover, since almost all sentences start with "Wir".... "we". Also, the Japanese writing on the stage select screen is not the name of the stage's location, it's the actual name of the stage. For instance, the first stage is called "Dinner of Flames" if you're Richter, and "Hometown Tragedy" if you're Maria. Were your friends aware of this, or is the aim of this patch to make the game playable rather than directly translate all the text?

Hey, that's cool. I don't think I'll be ripping/patching my disc for this, though (especially since the CDRs I have won't work in my Duo).
How's the Ys IV translation progress going? Or am I thinking of something else? I really hope a lot more questy PCE games get translations, since so few were localized for the US.
Yeah, it's going great! More so than I could've ever dreamed. I got a sound engineer that's working on dubbs as we speak, so we're going for a full translation all the way. Have patience, as I'm planning on making a topic when the next patch is ready in the General forum. =) But yeah, the script is finished and we even hacked in lowercase font support. I just need to wrap up additions in the README file. It'll be another week or two if I'm not too lazy. The adpcm dubbs will be about 30 MBs and will be a separate patch available sometime in the future. In the meantime, the regular patch includes a speech file with translated text of all the voice acting.

Well, dubbing as in presently. I only tested one audio clip after Dave (one of the programmers) just recently finished a wave->adpcm encoder. The difficulty and considerations involving creating subtitles make it impossible frankly. Far more easier - assuming you can do a recording - to replace an audio track/clip taking up the exact same space. Even if we had someone with the skill (And you would have to be at a beyond genius level) and time/patience to do it, the game is so cramped for space, it uses the dedicated adpcm memory of the PCE system to store the 8x12 English font tiles. That's why there're two cases in the game where you'll see a small, uppercase-only, 8x8 font being used right after some voice acting (The 8x12 font tiles aren't available for use at that time).Originally Posted by OmegaFlareX
