Thread: Why GC is more "powerful" than XBox

    SOURCE???

MS isn't going to try the much more powerful console thing anymore with the XB2 as they are going to try and lose less on it unlike the original as the original was selling at that price to make their userbase for their "real console" the XB2.
Maybe they can do both, Sony is going to try to have it both ways, I'm sure Microsoft will do the same. Its all speculation. We'll know when it ships.

  2. Nintendo was actually incurring an estimated loss of $20 on each Gamecube at launch (when it was priced $199). At the same time though, Microsoft was incurring an estimated $150 loss on their $299 XBox. Granted some of that additional XBox cost comes from the "extras" (HDD, BBA, etc) but had Nintendo gone for a $299 price bracket, a simiarly scaled up Gamecube (with a higher clocked GPU and additional RAM) would've destroyed XBox tech wise.

Also, it's not really known if Nintendo's selling at a loss at the $99 price point. More likely they just aren't seeing much profit or cutting even. When NCL/NEC switched GCN manufacturing fabs over to China in late 2002/early 2003, they reduced the console production costs to $100 (just for the main unit itself, controllers/cords/box not included). Costs have likely scaled down more since then too...

  3. Hmmm? I've always heard, that the Gamecube was actually the only console in this generation, to not be sold at a loss.

As I said before, Sony has their own factories, and hence why they are in a better position now as they don't have to amortise the costs of the factories like they had to with the PS2. And MS(IIRC it was robbie bach) has mentioned as much(will not be losing as much as they did with thhe Xbox) in interviews.

  6. kbuchanan just owned the entire "TNL Anti-Nintendo Crew", and they got nothing to say in reply.

    I love it.

Anyways, very interesting read. Looks like im going to have to get BG&E for GC.

God im sick of hearing this...Maybe was true on launch, but not anymore..

    Lets see...

Using pricewatch, lets build an Xbox.

    Intel P3 733mhz (slowest they had listed) = $53

    8X DVD rom = $20

    20 gig HD (smallest I could find) = $33

    Nvidia Geforce 3 Ti = $60

    64MB = $8

Figure the case, mobo, and controler roughly $40

    Thats $214. so, 1214 - 179.99 = $34.01 net loss.

Thats without Microsoft's insane buying power mind you.

It's still true. You also have to consider that the GeForce 3 chipset is embedded within the Xbox motherboard. It's not like you can go and pick up a MB with it built right in.

  9. You could if you partnered with nVidia and ordered them by the hundreds of thousands, like Microsoft did.

Yet, NVidia is'nt too rosy about the deal. Turns out they did'nt make much of a profit from the deal and from what has been said around the rumor mill, is'nt interested in making another deal with them.
