You can get a green card almost right away, I believe, which secures you pretty much the same rights as a full-fledged citizen. Next.

MVS's story shows that, if you do what it takes, you can become a citizen or at least get a green card and be here legally and support yourself. After all, his dad came here with $300, and he obviously did okay. Why should Matt go to all the trouble of applying for citizenship when someone else can just sneak in?

What exactly did you have to do to become a citizen, Matt?

You go down to the INS center in downtown los angeles.

I had my green card, so beforehand, I wrote for information on how to do it (1993, no real internet :/). They send you a booklet on what to study, for a test.

Took 3 days of going down there, and my work wasn't too pleased about that. It was 3 days of waiting in lines, go here, now go here, no you go here, and so on.

Finally, you take a test. Questions like:

When was the US Constitution created?
What are the first 10 ammendments called?
First president?
Who are our Senators/Governor in CA?

Then the guy had me write "I like to read books" on the form. Testing literacy I imagine, which sounds silly since the guy next to me had a translator with him when he was doing it.

After all that's done, they called me back a few months later. Went down to the LA convention center with about 5,000 others. You sit in a room, a Judge talks about citizenship, cue a lot of videos with bald eagles and US Flags.

You get up, get your form, and then it's all done.

Can't complain too much about the process, though. It was just one of those things that I really wanted to do.

When you aren't born here, it's different and getting that form that says you are now a Citzen of the US is quite cool.

Getting that form is one of top 5 days of my life.

Very cool. So, I'd imagine that people sneaking in here illegally must annoy you greatly considering the fact that you worked and went through the proper channels to achieve your citizenship.

Well, I think there is a way to do it.

There are things I would personally change, such as making any person that serves in the military for 4 years an instant citizen. Anyone that does that deserves it.

Then I would kill the auto citizen if born in the US illegally.

Can you still get a green card by marrying a U.S. citizen? I'd consider changing that as well (though it's not that big a deal). If you marry a Canadian citizen, you still have to jump through hoops to become a citizen there.

And of course, there's the ridiculous "if you hit dry land, you can stay" thing in Florida.

I feel the same way about American citizens who collect welfare. The place my mom works has girls that MAYBE work 10 hours a week and have something like 6 children with 6 different guys and just live off the governments money and rarely go to work.

I live in this country, I pay taxes, I'm a legal citizen, so I'll say anything I like about people that illegally sneak into this country that I end up supporting with my tax dollars. Fuck them.

Thoughts of working to support those mooches make me retch violently. They need to be cut off from the handouts and told to work more hours. And SIX children? While I think China's one child limit is ludicrous, six is too many for one woman in a case where two or three is plenty. We shouldn't have to foot the bill. I know that the children may well have been born before the women fell on hard times, but then if they have any more children it's their own damned fault.

Yes, it pisses me off too that some of my money is going to illegals. If foreigners choose to immigrate illegally then they should be shown zero amnesty even if they come forward. Kick down their fucking doors and round their asses up for deportation.

If someone from another nation wants to immigrate to the USA, he or she should have to go through all the normal INS channels like everyone else- and learn the laws about minimum wage, too. There should be a 3 month education course for immigrants including basic English and exams. Strict limits should be placed on how many immigrants are admitted in a year, as well as where they come from. The INS and Border Patrol need to be more vigilant. Companies who pay immigrants those subminimum wages should be fined heavily.

After catching up on this thread I'm definately siding with Dolemite in his arguments with Violently Happy. I'm all for people paving their own way and coming into the country legally, contributing to society and going on with life. However anyone who just sits on their ass and collects welfare pisses me off, most people who get full-time welfare live much better then I do and they damn well know they're cheating the system. And I don't mean to be racist VH but citizens of this country have a good reason to be "stereotypical" as it was recently reported that 89% of Hispanics in this country were on welfare. If someone like my father who's been a drug addict since he was 14 with no high-school degree or really education for that matter, has managed to rid himself of his demons, get a technical degree, and take a job as an eletrical engineer has been able to make it in our system without the welfare system shows that it doesn't take societies finest to suceed.

While I realize that it may be harder for illegals to get jobs because of the fact that they're illegal it doesn't discount the fact that a good deal of them don't even try that hard because they get support. If they learned the langauge then it'd help them a lot, but many immigrants do not. Don't want to learn English? I say get out. When I went to the DMV the place had nothing but non-English speaking Hispanics and people handling their DUI's. Why should these people be able to leach off of our economy and tax-dollars?

Fuck American citizens, fuck Hispanics, fuck Africans, fuck Europeons, and fuck Asians who live this way.
