Thread: Canada province/city impression thread

  1. It sounds like an okay place sggg with lots of variety and things to do... OH, like the city I lived so close to my entire life (NYC) and the city I live in now (LA).

Im just trying to say... stop sucking Montreal's cock.

I wouldn't be proud of inventing hockey if I were Montreal. Ha!

I should work for the tourist bureau.
Yes you should. The amount of stats you can pull up from the city is scary.

Wow, you must not get out much. I've seen a billion mind numbingly boring places that are utterly lacking an identity and don't have anything unique about them. Also, some places are unique for shitty things.

But I am not saying anyone should give a damn about MTL. I am not trying to convince anyone to like it. To each his own... but what I am saying it is world famous and unique for very good things. That's simply a fact regardless of anyone's personal ignorance of it. An American lacking global perspective is hardly unique in and of itself, but even most geographically challenged Americans know a thing or two about the city and huge number of them visit it every year.

  3. Careful there, SGGG.

  4. Camp X was a spy training camp.
    James Bond kinda stuff.

But anyways, Toronto was once given this unusual description: "New York, as run by the Swiss."

You are right. I am wrong.

    But it tastes so good?

Anyway, yeh, having been a resident of both places I can say that MTL is a lot like NYC and the two cities have many similarities and shared history, thanks to the proximity and status.

LA is another city that's unique and has a lot of famous aspects, and that's pretty much my point. Behind NYC and LA, MTL is one of the most well known NA cities, along with San Francisco, Toronto, and Miami.

I've read a lot of books.... and I didn't move to MTL for no reason. I fell in love with the place.

  7. Ok, from what I've seen in this thread, I can come to this conclusion:

Torontonions just accept that they live in the centre of the universe, because that's what the rest of Canada sarcastically calls the city. "Whatever."

Montrealers are positive their "super-cultured" city deserves that title, and are totally bitter about it.

Hmm... I traveled across the USA and every place I saw, outside of dumpy towns like Rapids City, SD, had a unique identity and sense of place to them. Maybe you can't appreciate that because Montreal and Iceland and wherever else has numbed you to it, I dunno.

And, gee, I dont know if you are calling me geographically challenged to insult me or what, but check my age compared to yours, and maybe I didnt get a chance to see the world on mommy and daddy's dime when I was younger? Hmm...

Anyway, like I said, I dont hear anything coming out from Montreal that's so great. I hear about plenty of other cities and what's going on in them at all times of the year and right now Im struggling to think of one bit of info that came from Montreal in 2003 that got my attention!

When I think cafes and restaurants and food, I think Paris. When I think fashion, I think Milan or New York. When I think film, I think Los Angeles, etc. Im sure Montreal is all very nice in all of these regards but so are a bunch of other places. Los Angeles has terrific food and great universities, and so does New York City. Plus Montreal has that shitty Canadian weather.

I'm not insulting you but if you can't find Montréal on a map you are geographically challenged. It's a fact.

And way to make stuff up. I've never travelled anywhere interesting with my parents. I've been to Europe once and I went on a shoestring budget with icepop where we backpacked and stayed in crappy hostels and ate many of our meals in supermarkets.

Go figure.... and the French think it's Lyon, which is the gastronomic capital of that country.

Errr, pay attention. Never once did I say MTL was more famous or better than any of those world class cities. I just said that it was among the many famous cities of the world. I never said it was on par with NYC, Paris, London, Tokyo, etc. But it is in the second tier with cities like Stockholm, San Francisco, Cairo, etc. Regardless of what anything thinks about the place good or bad(that's their right), this is a simple fact.

There they go again!!! MAN THAT WORLD FAIR WAS AWESOME, PS CANADIANS GOING ALL THE WAY!!!!!ONE!!!

Seriously though, Kenshin said it best, I'm not saying Toronto is the greatest place in the world [I hate it], but I sure as fuck know that Montreal thinks it is.
