Thread: RATE THESE IMPORT GAMES Part 2!!!!!!!!!!

  1. Despair,
I haven't looked for the game in at least a year, and that was what it was going for back then. Either way, the most I'd spend would be around $100, if it were new.

  2. Psychic Killer Taromaru is a great game, but not worth the ridiculous prices. It's a great platformer with some of the best 2D graphics I've seen on Saturn, although the characters are a bit small. I don't know if I would compare it to Shinobi despite the ninja stuff, mainly because I really despise the Saturn Shinbo...hopefully you weren't comparing it to that version . The gameplay is kind of strange since you have an aiming cursor that you can use to line up your shots. I'm really surprised at the prices I've seen this game going for, it must be extremely rare because the gameplay is good, but not worth those prices.

  3. SegaGaga is cool. The intro is classic, the best part being the giant pixelated Golden Axe guys. I never made it far into the game, but I did enjoy it (I plan on finishing the game this summer ). Not as much Sega-related stuff in the first few hours of the game as I had hoped for. Very quirky game.

Maybe Rose will jump in here and say a few words on SegaGaga. She has an FAQ going for it at gamefaqs.com

  5. ok I'm digging through old gamefan issue's & finding new import games never heard of sooooo here is the listt, give info descriptions/reviews of the games if you played em:
    IMPORTS:

-Chaos Seed -psx - it looks like a 2d rpg? they say the battle engine is exactly like Chrono Trigger
Chaos Seed is the coolest game I don't know how to play .

It's a Sega Saturn game and a Super Famicom game. I am not aware of any PSX version, although I may be wrong... I'm fairly certain it's SFC/SS only though.

Chaos Seed is a ... hrm.. how to describe... it's a "dungeon creation"/resource management/action RPG blend. You basically control a character who is placed underground. You create rooms and passageways to make up a workable dungeon. There is a minimap telling you where the resources are, so you kinda want to structure your dungeons around them. The general goal is to harvest energy balls from the dungeons. Since you'll be building a variety of rooms with different functions, you will need energy for those rooms as well. So you will also have to purchase? some animals to help collect the energy balls to distribute them to the other rooms. By doing so, you'll be getting more energy balls each turn. WHen you have enough energy, you can clear the dungeon (and restore the earth above you.)

All of this is going on within an RPG context where there's towns, NPCs, bosses... And while you're doing this, there will be plenty of enemies to fight Action-RPG style. That's where the animals come in handy as well, as they will help fight for you. So you need to protect your rooms from destruction as well as your animals, as they are the ones helping to transport the energy. You have a variety of different attacks at your disposal as well as magic. This is an RPG in that you do level up and gain better attributes and stuff.

It's really hard to describe the game, and I don't know what a lot of the room functions do, but I could(and have) spent countless hours with the game and it's pretty darn fun. It is a bit complex, though, which is probably why it's not mentioned more often, but it's one of the best games for the SS.

A better more in depth review and description of play can be found here:

-Sagagaga- DC -I NEVER heard or seen a in-depth review of this game, I heard ppl say it was good but that's it
dunno what type of game it is, if the graphics aare 2d or 3d etc...
The premise is you're a kid who all of a sudden gets the responsibility of making Sega fly with the public.

Graphics are 2d on a variety of levels :P Most of the characters you meet are more like paper-cut outs. It's supposed to be a blend of traditional RPG and managing a video company.

The dungeons I've gone thru so far have been rooms in Sega HQ, and the "enemies" have been things like Programmers, Directors, etc. Once you beat an enemy, you will generally have an option to ask them to join you. This is done by answering a series of quiz questions. If you answer a specific number right (doesn't have to be 100%, and the more q's you answer, the more chance you have to make your goal), they join your team. As an RPG, it's very traditional with a standard Attack, Defend, Run, Item gameplay for battles. There's also the standard fetchquests and such as well. The quirkiness is the game rarely takes itself seriously and there's tons of in-jokes around.

I've not progressed far enough to comment on the "business sim" aspect of it. Too many games ^^;. But I found it enjoyable so far, and definitely pretty quirky.

-Slayers Royal RPG -saturn - this looks cool & I never heard anyone talking about it
That was my first import game, and I can't say it's that great, aside from the op theme (Touch Yourself, c/w on the Slayers Special OAV single). Basically it's kinda a SRPG with Japanese-style adventure sequences in between. (or a Japanese adventure game w/SRPG sequences in between). However, the problem is that the SRPG parts is that it's all automatic... you don't really have much control over your characters making it really frustrating to play. You can tell them to attack certain enemies and such, and/or use certain spells, but you can't really plan out your strategy like other similar games. The battles are just kinda irritating, and we'll leave it at that.

The adventure portion isn't special either. It's generally just walking to varying locations (via a menu) to the next event. Interspersed with this are some FMVs made specifically for the game. So for a Slayers fan who must have everything, maybe that's a reason to own it. Unfortunately it's horribly pixelly SS FMV so mileage may vary for even that. The entire game is voiced, so seiyuu fans may enjoy it as well.

If I recall correctly, there was an option to select the manual battle (too lazy to take my copy out again and check ). For some weird reason it is set automatic as default, and it confused heck out of me in the begining. Still, turning it into manual control doesn't help the game from being anything but mediocre.
There's Playstation port of Slayers Royal (both 1 & 2), PSX version does have a few advantages over the Saturn original like (slightly) better quality FMV & bonus games (such as Amelia's Justice Drop game), but sadly the actual game is again, mediocre.
If anyone is looking for a decent game based on Slayers, I'd suggest Slayers Wonderful on PSX instead of Slayers Royal 1 & 2.

  7. Re: Psychic Killer

Flux (above) is correct. I imported the game when it first came out (yep, about $60), mainly because it looked fairly cool, and I understood that Time Warner Interactive Japan was only pressing about 5,000 copies.

It's a cool, but odd, game and unless you are a freak collector, it's not worth anywhere near $150 -$300. The control is akward, nowhere near the tightness exhibited by Shinobi III. However, the 2D graphics (with isometrically shifting 3D backgrounds) are pretty neat, not to mention unique. It allows for 2-player cooperative play, which is nice (although the secondary character is a little tricky to use). Enemies are a bizarre mix of gothic demons and creatures from Japanese mythology. It's really bloody, too, in a cheesy sort of way.

The game is pretty tough, and beating the game (about an hour to an hour and a half of continuous play -- if you're good) will leave you with a sore thumb, since you are constantly pressing the various attack buttons (I mean NON-STOP).

In the end, it's a cool and unique (not to mention rare) game, but I wouldn't grab it unless you find it for a reasonable price.
