While that eliminates some of the mystique of getting the old games, it means I'll actually be able to get them. The scarab one is cake, but trying to get the other two through Master Ninja scores across the board sounds like a life-stealer.

Everyone should go watch the streaming video review of Ninja Gaiden on Gamespot...towards the end it gets very....different.

Remixed music that isn't as good as the original... but big fucking deal. The upside is the SNES Trilogy had the difficulty of NG3 tweaked so it's actually beatable.

I'm working on getting all master ninja ranks in hard mode, up to level 7 so far and everything's working out. Getting Master Ninja isn't so tough, as long as you keep the karma display on and concentrating on wiping out enemies within the time limit.
The limit stuff looks to be more important than ninpo, essence and time put together since they only give you 10,000 karma (I think) each at the end of the stage, and every time you waste the baddies within the time limit you get that same amount. You get even bigger karma points if you kill off the enemies way under time. For instance, say there are 3 black ninjas and you have 15 seconds to kill them. Do it in 20 and you only get 3000 points. Do it in say, 10 and you get maybe 5000 - PLUS the 10,000 karma bonus for coming in under the limit in the first place.
I wonder if all that karma is held in reserve, so if you have a great first couple stages then a stage where you don't perform so well - but you have a huge karma resivoir, can you still achieve master ninja on that stage just through the force of your earlier karma? Hmmmmm.

No, I'm pretty sure it starts over. You can 100,000 in each karma category, Time, Essence and Kills I believe. If you get over 349,000 I think you get Master Ninja. Your karma score always goes up, but the ranks you get [i.e. ninja dog to master ninja] are scores tabulated from one stage, they're not dependant on anything you've done before.
What is the "essence" rating at the end of the levels?
