Theatres make very little money on ticket sales. To offset costs they jack up the food to make the majority of their money (way more than half their profits is food).Originally Posted by usagi
Yeah all the theaters are worried that if they release the DVD on the same day no one will go to the theater what-so-ever. And they are right, lots of people are more than willing to just buy the DVD, even though it costs like at least $5 more than the ticket. But they now own it, can watch it again, eat their own food, etc.Originally Posted by usagi
I am a big fan of seeing movies at the theater, especially the super mega screens that are getting instaled with amazing sound systems. But I know a lot of people who LOATH the theater.
I think the ONLY way to solve the movie theater slump is to lower the price of everything. But thats not going to happen.
Barf! Barf! Barf!

I can understand that, but I just think that the mark up is so high that if the prices were a bit less crazy more people would buy the stuff and they would still make their money in the end. Also maybe more familiess would go if they knew they could actually afford some consessions.
Releasing DVD and movie theatre at the same time would kill theatres, or force them to lower their prices to compete (and maybe still go out of business if they aren't making enough profit).
You might see studios do it with one or two smaller releases over the next couple of years, but I doubt this strategy will blow up big time.

That's how I used to think. But now that I have a sound system which far outclasses most theaters (on a personal level, naturally) that hurt a lot of my caring about theaters. I'd rather just see them at home where I can watch movies at the volume that I want to and if I have to piss I can pause it. This isn't helped by some of my friends wanting to sit in the back of theaters, at which point the screen is about the same size as my TV.Originally Posted by Clash!
Anyway, saw this tonight. Pretty good, although it was hard for me to concentrate so I couldn't really enjoy it. I was sitting next to two girls that were absolutely enamored with Bale and hearing them whisper kept distracting me, multiplied even more so by how I couldn't possibly figure out how they thought he was hot since he was so amazingly unremarkable I kept forgetting what he looked like whenever he wasn't on-screen and mistaked him for an extra a couple of times. Combined with Bruce's father reminding me of Christopher Walken, Gary Oldman reminding me of Dustin Hoffman, Katie Holmes bugging me because I couldn't figure out which of about four actress names she was (Matthew McConaughey has the same effect on me as Holmes and Bale), and Liam Neeson's beard looking so terrible that I felt like I was watching a stage production up close I was unable to enjoy it as a movie and could only view them as actors. Shame, really, because everything else was really cool.
Oh, yeah, Scarecrow was pimp. Never seen that guy before (though he too bugged me a bit since he reminded me of Johnny Depp) so I had no real problems with him. I also surprisingly didn't have any issue with Morgan Freeman even though being the only black guy made his face stick out that much more. Maybe by the time it hits DVD I'll be able to enjoy the movie for what it is.
Maybe if there was an overall across the board everythearter out there improvement
sure the newer thearters going up are nice with stadium seating, comfortable chairs, big screens, making sure most if not every thearter has surround sound, but the majority of the thearters out there aren't like that
theres quite a few thearters in Northern Jersey and IMHO the experience at most of them just fucking blows, shitty projectors, crappy uncomfortable seats, that become a literal pain in the ass during a long movie, surround sound in like 1 out of their 12 thearters
sure you have the Clifton Commons there which is fucking AWESOME but the rest blow, I get a better movie watching experience at home, with my nice dvd player, nice tv and real surround sound
I've noticed the clifton commons thearter is almost always packed while if i do get dragged some where else even for big movies the thearters are never packed
This review makes me believe that you were under the influence of drugs during the movie.Originally Posted by MechDeus
I've yet to go to the clifton commons, but I've been to the loews in wayne, and it wasn't too bad. But theaters around me now down in Ocean County fucking suck so damn much. The sound cracks in and out and image quality is poor. I wish the movie industry would move away from film projection and go to digital, or ideally, giant lcd/hdtv screens or something. I know it would drive up prices, but I wouldn't mind paying it if it meant that the colors on the screen wouldn't be so dull, washed out and muted.heres quite a few thearters in Northern Jersey and IMHO the experience at most of them just fucking blows, shitty projectors, crappy uncomfortable seats, that become a literal pain in the ass during a long movie, surround sound in like 1 out of their 12 thearters

Like I said, I couldn't concentrate. I had been out running errands when I got redirected into helping someone move which meant I had to skip dinner which made me tired, a little sore, wasted the entire chunk of my day I had set aside for playing with my new guitar equipment (which I couldn't get home to until after the movie... which was so late that now I can't use it without headphones, blah), and so I didn't even care when it was time to go. I decided to go ahead anyway because otherwise that would've been the third time I skipped out on seeing this because I didn't feel like watching it and I felt like otherwise I'd just put it off indefinately. It being $5 and free popcorn night didn't hurt, either.Originally Posted by Will
