Not sure where you're going with this, but it seems offbase. Which part of the ritual are the clerics trying to get rid of? Making the pilgrimage to Mecca? Throwing stones at the statue?

The throwing of the stones isn't directly related to 250 people getting trampled. Making the pilgrimage is an important part of Islam.

And "the violent actions of a few hundred pilgrims" has nothing to do with it. This is a crowd so large that its actions can murder 250 people with its feet - who knows how many people had bones broken, chests crushed, so on.

Instances like this show a top-down fanatic, stupid disregard for life that goes far beyond "a few hundred pilgrims".

"www.godhatesfags.com" and its ilk are its own problem, but aren't really equivalent to this in any way.

Just to clarify - I don't think that individual muslims were trying to kill other muslims in the crowd. I don't think it was intentional. I don't even think that the individual people whose individual feet trampled other individual people to death were cognisant of the fact that they were killing someone else.

Just - why does this happen? Why does stuff like this happen there? This sort of stuff doesn't happen at Promisekeeper meetings. Is it okay? Is it relatively unimportant in the general scheme of things? Were 244 muslims trampled to death during a 2004 religious ceremony because of the area's history of colonial degredation? How can stuff like this stop?
