I don't think it has anything to do with gouging the customer. It's more about a return for their efforts. Sega could'nt do it with the DC and Sony is'nt exactly pulling in cash barrels with thier PS2 online service either. Sure Live is a success in the US, but what about Japan, or Europe? Nintendo's interest starts in their homeland and goes from there, much like MS's starts in the US.
What percentage of console gamers are playing online, compared to PC gamers? It's a lot easier to just log on with the PC, then to drag a cable across your living room. I'm sure a lot of posters on these forums are willing to do that, but is the average joe going to, when it's more convenient to get their online fix with their PC.
Yeah, I'd love to see games like Double Dash, F-Zero and Animal crossing with full online content, but realistically it's just a niche market, until most homes in the US have a Cat.5 cable running from a switch to every bedroom/livingroom in America.

D in particular dosen't have anything else to offer me. If FF:CC was online, i'd pick it up in a heartbeat, but for now I'm skipping it until it's around 10-15.
