Celebrity Deathmatch and Evil Dead: Fistful of Boomstick moved copies better than BG&E. And they sucked. But they cost less upon release. Imagine if a company took a gamble on releasing a non-crap title at that $19.99 price point. I betcha it'd put up some great numbers.
I'd like to point out that in addition to the costs incurred by producing a single title, said title must also recoup the costs of failed titles. Sort of like the music industry. For every Eminem there's a D-12 (woof). The record label takes their profits from Em to subsidize all the bands that don't work. Just like how Gran Turismo (an established franchise that rakes it in) subsidizes a financially risky (but innovative) property like Ico.
