Look, I like Futurama, I've watched it since the first episode aired, but it's not the be-all end-all of cartoon comedy. Some good gags, sure, but it's not worthy of all this mad worship.
I also don't quite follow the YCDTOTV/Futurama connection, although my assessment above still stands.
Oh, and I don't see much King of the Hill talk around here, or even Beavis and Butthead. Mike Judge has done more than just make Office Space.

I'll also go on record here as saying the Japanese have never, and will never make a unironically funny television show.

Totally forgot about this show, but it was great.Dr. Katz, Professional Therapist -- From Tom Snyder Productions (the guys who did Home Movies and one of my favorite 8-bit computer games of all time, Agent USA), this show saw the debuts of many gifted comedians such as Dave Chappelle.
And as for Beavis & Butthead... I havent seen the show since I was an idiot 14 year old. Is it actually clever? Is there enough going on below the surface to make it worth watching?
I like King of the Hill, never really got into it, but I dig its style.
That's very close minded of you, champ. I could make a blanket statement about the Chinese or the Russians if I didn't get their humor as well. The Japanese are capable of subtleness and parody. The majority of Japanese comedy you've watched may have leant toward more broad comedy like slapstick and sight gags. You don't think Most Extreme Elimination Challenge (Takesh's Castle) wasn't funny the first time to the Japanese (though the American dub is hilarious x10). Broad comedy inherently appeals to the the lowest common denominator. Some people don't dig anime, granted, but they should find something to enjoy in the mock-RPG humor of Dragon Half or the kid-show-on-crack insanity of Kodomo no Omocha.Originally Posted by sleeveboy

King of the Hill is very hit-or-miss for me, while Beavis and Butthead was fun to watch just a few years ago.

I've seen one episode of King of the Hill that made me crack up. I just don't think it's really funny. And I hate Peggy, she's so god damn annoying. Whenever I see that show I think about how Futurama should be on in it's timeslot. A lot of times Fox will run 2 episodes back to back because they have nothing else to play. Stupid Fox.Originally Posted by sleeveboy

I don't know what it is about American and British humor. Just like the current US-UK military alliance, our humor is so far superior to the rest of the world that it would take hundreds of years for them to catch up. Forget "shock and awe", we should just send in Larry David and Ricky Gervais to remold Iraq.
