im not going to go back and re-read the story before i see the movie. (pretty much ruined the whole LOTR trilogy for me ) but i dont remember much about the story at all.
most of the trailers ive seen didnt really look all that great. one of the more in depth ones i saw recently did make it look more interesting though.
but with this cast, how could it suck? dont seem likely.
the role does seem odd (judging by the trailers), but Tutturo is an amazing actor. ive got faith!
I'll admit that Depp did an excellent job but they could've gotten just about anyone and it still would've been fine. He did do some Depp things to make it his own but it didn't really need them. I will say that he looked damn good in this movie though.
Edit: I also loved when he used the lyrics to a Talking Heads song.
The film's ending was totally, totally different from the novella's:
In the book, Mort doesn't kill Ted or his wife. He was going to but gets shot to death by the insurance investigator (who was a man, and a much more prominent character in the story). It turns out that Mort had stolen a story years ago, the very story that got his writing career started, in fact (Sowing Season). He ripped it off an highly talented young guy from a college Creative Writing class, who was from the South. He didn't really intend for things to happen the way they did, but when the checks started showing up, he decided to keep quiet about what he'd done. We are led to believe that Mort's extreme guilt about it along with his imagination (Mort was in fact a talented writer) was so strong - kicked into overdrive by the stress of his divorce - that he actually created John Shooter and made him a reality. He wanted to punish himself for what he had done but couldn't do it himself.
The film's ending was nothing more than the ending to the Mort's/Shooter's story Secret Window, aka Sowing Season. None of that really happened, in King's novella.
For the most part, David Koepp did a very good job keeping the original content.....except for the ending. I'm really confused about why the change was made, especially since all the rest of it was so true to King's novella. Maybe the studio made him do it, or the ever-dreaded audience survey.
Anyways, in spite of that, I still liked it a lot. Timothy Hutton also did a fine job. I would imagine people who haven't read the book would enjoy it even more than I did, but I would also recommend reading it for the original ending. Kinda like a director's cut or something.
Depp is the fucking man. I went into this one knowing very little and loved it. Really fast paced, some really funny parts, and just a great concept. You could tell it's a King story too. It was like The Shining and Fight Club mashed together.
