  1. anybody confirm if this game DOES allow you to record matches and play them back with a free form camera? i might do a combo vid for this shit if it has that option.

Because you have a big advantage on offence, like in any fight or fighting game, as the other person is forced to react to you, and eventually they'll mess up.

Perhaps you're some super-god of DOA, and if you can block every string people throw at you, then congrats, I guess your criticisms are sound. The problem is all the characters have mix-ups, and people can stop their chains short. If they do, you'll be stuck waiting for the combo to end so you can throw, or you'll still be blocking or countering and they'll throw you. Fail to block properly, and they can set up combos or just peck away at you with the odd hits, which add up pretty quick in DOA. If throws are so quick, then you should be able to low-throw [crouch dashing] people who use your 2-part mix-up if they're predictable.

Granted, most of my competitive experience is from DOA3, so maybe DOA2 is fraught with these imbalances, and throw breakers for command throws would really stop a lot of this nonsense, but I still think the game is entirely playable.

The only real problem with DOA2 vs 3 is counter system is too powerful. It does too much damage and its too easy to connect with one, even with arcade style counters (the only difference between those and 'easy' counters is about a half hour of practice anyway). 3 scaled back the damage and gave you more options against a counter happy opponent, to the point that someone who relied on counters would be down before he knew what happened. Not that it's impossible to counter counters in DOA2, they're just more annoying than they really should be. It's something that I don't want to have to readjust to.

Of course I've only played against unskilled friends so what the hell do I know.

  4. FuryFox: I still think too many moves lead to a guaranteed throw. Maybe that is just from my not playing the game properly, poking and prodding with too many singular moves. I reconigize that most of the canned strings in this game have several variations (one of the things that distinguishes it from other fighters, actually), and a lot of those can not be defened on reaction. Then again, I do not have the experience to know how many of them have signficant tells, or can be defeated with fuzzy blocking. Delayed input also throws a wrench into things, but from my experience there is not enough "cancellable" recovery (the recovery from a move that can be cancelled by going into the next part of the canned sequence). A lot of this can be overcome with enough experience and training... but who plays this game seriously? Anyone? Bueller? (That's the funny thing about these arguments -- what really is tournament tested?)

This is probably just one of those things that works much better in theory than in practice. Thanks for calling me on that though; for whatever reason I can get illogical at times when it. One way or another this is going to all come out in the wash once people start playing online.

A lot of times the tourney crowd is fickle in this country -- take for instance a rock solid game such as Vampire Savior, which has one of the finest fighting engines from any game IMO and is solid and well made, yet gets no play here, of course it gets tons in Japan, but my point is, just because it isn't officially part of the tourney scene, doesn't mean it is broken, though in the case of DOA, there has been enough testing and playing done to prove that character imbalance and other issues make it a "masher" just like KoF MI and many other 3-D games.

Tourney 3-D is Tekken, SC, VF series because they have proven to last the test of competitive time.

Now saying all this, who cares? Is the online arena not a tournament setting? Can you not get enough competition to not worry about it? I for one love the game and I play competitive fighters in tourneys. It's a nice break from the 2-D scene. The game is gorgeous. I hope Tecmo shipped my shizz.

  6. I played the demo last night ( on the latest OXM disc). No surprises. It looks beautiful, and while I don't doubt that various tweaks and balance adjustments were made, the basic feel is unchanged.

Which leads to a brief comment: I've never understood all of the complaints about the reversal system. The game is designed for VERY fast matches -- it's meant to be exciting in the sense that everything happens very quickly and the tide can turn at any time. You are almost forced to be overly aggressive and gameplay is very reflexive, as opposing to a slower-paced, more strategic fighter [and yes, I realize those fighters require reflexes, too.] Damaging reversals are a huge part of keeping that fast, uncertain pace of the game. And a point that has been made over and over by people who play the game: against anyone other than a complete newb, reversals are not especially easy to pull off, and a whiffed reversal results in immediate punishment. Big risk for potentially big reward.

Anyway, despite the (hopefully) great online play, I doubt DOAU will suddenly convert the haters. On the other hand, perhaps Tina's new black cat suit will -- yikes.

My copy is waiting for me after work.
