Thread: The Passion of the Christ

  1. This might be a stupid question, but as I'm not really versed on the Bible... who was the woman who came up to Jesus when he was carrying the cross, gave him a cloth to wipe his face, and tried to offer him water? I know enough to know who most of the major characters were, but had no idea at all who she was.

I believe she was "artistic license". PotC was based on John's account of the crucifixion, and no woman approaches Jesus like that in the book of John. I could, of course, be wrong. But that is how I understand it.

To be more clear, yes I'm pretty sure that is the case. In fact the entire scene of Jesus carrying the cross was rife with artistic license, as here's John's oh so detailed account of it...

    The Crucifixion

So the soldiers took charge of Jesus. Carrying his own cross, he went out to the place of the Skull. Here they crucified him, and with him two others -- one on each side and Jesus in the middle.
I must say I found Jesus saying "why have you forsaken me, Father?", to be a little unsettling. That seems to be a pretty bold thing to just throw in there.

  3. I’m waiting for the DVD. While two hours of a man being beaten to death slowly sounds fun, I can think of much cheaper ways of going about it then shelling out for tickets and popcorn.

As for Christians, I’m sure it will provide a decent reminder on how God allegedly had to impregnate a woman with Himself to make Himself human so He could sacrifice Himself to Himself to convince Himself to change a rule He made. And THAT little plan still allegedly took 2000 years or so to think up. I guess I shouldn’t be so hard on Him, since His first plan to rid the world of sin, flushing down the celestial toilet and drowning everyone, failed miserably. Give me omnipotence for a day, and I’ll do a better job running things then that.

Also, why would Jesus ask Himself why he has forsaken Himself?

Eh, maybe, but I'd still rather railgun her.

Yeah, artistic license. Judas returning to the high priests and throwing the coins back before hanging himself is another one, I believe. I'll wait for CV to verify on that if needed. I know I don't remember that in the little reading that I've done.

In other news, another good weekend bringing it up to $264,041,000 US. Friggin' A.

I know you're just being a jackass but I'll bite. Mel took the stance that Jesus is a separate entity from God. Not that he was God in a human form. Which is valid. There are many things in the movie that support this, what Jesus said on the cross being one of them. I won't say anymore, to not give anything away. But suffice to say, Jesus comes across as quite human in this movie.

So, Jesus wasn't God, but He was God. Is this some kind of Clark Kent/Superman thing?

  7. no it was not artistic llicense, her name is veronica, those who do the stations of the cross will recognize her from the 6th station. I will do some checking to see which, if any biblical acount she is from, but she is a symbol of comforting in the catholic church. (returns form checking) ok, no, she in in no official accounts, but she is still in the catholic stations of the cross.

also, the "forsaken " bit is from the book of mark and matthew, if you recall from the opening, the garden of gethsmenie(sp) jesus was not entirely on board on this whole plan. as god, he knew what had to be done, but as a human, it scared him badly and he wanted to have it passed from him. And that is his final anger at the plan, just before he came to grips with it and forgave his assailents

So, the Trinity is just one guy with multiple personality disorder?

K, and Judas throwing back the coins? I'm not Catholic, but I was just taught "Son/Lamb of God," so I dunno where the confusion stems from. Maybe when God is used it's meant to mean godly? Where's CV when you need him??

Ah, ok. I really should have read the other accounts. I read John's before seeing the movie, on recommendation from my Bible friend. That part of the movie I found odd, maybe I should read Matthew and Mark.

Oddly enough, I'd like to see this movie again. The violence was just so over the top I think there are a lot of non-violent details I missed out on.
