When will gamers learn that Sega's sports games are just as good, if not better than EA's? I swear they just pick them up just because it says EA on it...
It's Sega's own fault that their games sell like shit. They've been stupid as fuck with Visual Concepts, and their ESPN deal only makes it worse. In November I believe NFL2k3 sold more than ESPN Football. And what the fuck was the point of just putting the espn name on the game, without giving it any advertising? They use madden on the goddamn channel for god's sake. Sega deserves it's shitty sales for not knowing how to sell their games.

  2. I'm surprised SMB3 is so low on there. Most stores couldn't keep the thing in stock.

As opposed to the Getaway, which sold a couple copies on release then sat there selling about a copy every two months.

    Look at their release dates.

Sega's NFL 2k5 could be the best football game of all time, and I guarantee Madden will still outsell it based on name alone.

I don't see how the ESPN deal makes it worse, since it makes the games that much better, espically 2k4. But they still should have called it NFL 2k4, instead of that fucking name change, people probably thought there was no NFL 2k4

I'd be sad as hell if Sega gave up on the sports games just because of low sales, as their hockey and basketball titles absoulutely SMOKE EA's, and their baseball and football titles are getting there.

Bingo. When I went out with a friend who was looking for a football game I suggested he pick up ESPN and he told me no, he didn't trust ESPN's games and that he was going to grab Madden. I then informed him that ESPN this year was Sega's 2k4, which completely 180ed him on the situation because he had no clue.

So if people that pay way more attention to football games then me know less about what's going on, something's definately wrong with the advertising and getting the word out. The whole name-brand thing is certainly the biggest factor.

I read your post like 9 times in disbelief that I would ever write such an engrish phrase...I was right

And if you want to talk about shitty games selling by the truckload, talk about Shenmue, i know you won't disappoint me there.

Don't forget Sega idiotically delayed ESPN Football for some reason, so it didn't even hit store shelves until a month after Madden had already sold well over a million copies. Regardless of which game was better this year, Sega's series had no shot at all. People don't want to wait for their football games.

I own 11 games on that list.

  8. Only 6 Japanese games on the entire list. Only 1 Japanese game on the entire list that isn't Nintendo. How things have changed since the 16 bit era....

What saddens me is that SSX3 isn't anywhere on this list. It was a brilliant game, full of mainstream appeal and all I hear is that it didn't do too well. Thats just awful.

This list also proves that if you make a commercial for a game, any game, it will sell.
SSX3 had a bunch of commercials... and apparently doesn't adhere to your theory of having a commercial equals sales.

Same with Prince of Persia, which probably got more air time than any single gaming commercial.
