Thanks for trying it out! Hopefully we'll see more servers running the map now that it's been officially released.

Mouse sensitivity is a relative sort of thing, depending on what sort of mouse you've got. The only accurate way to compare it is to pick a point on the horizon (in-game, naturally) and measure how far your mouse physically travels in order to turn 360 degrees.

Mine is at default, which is quite quick, but I stabilize my wrist on the desk so that reticle movement is through finger movement only. If I need the extra speed for, say, close-range fighting, I can simply lift my wrist. I'd like to try a trackball one of these days.

One thing I'd absolutely recommend is to turn off auto-switch weapons (if you haven't already) and to re-bind every single weapon to a specific key. It takes a bit of getting used to (I ran around DM levels for a bit, just switching weapons), but will take your game to a whole other level. Here's how I have mine:

    ESDF: WASD equivalent
Q: Minigun / Assault Rifle. "Finisher" weapons. Minigun has priority.
    W: Shock Rifle
    R: Rocket Launcher / AVRiL
    T: Link
    A: Sniping weapons
    G: Flak cannon
    4: Bio / Mine Layer
    5: Super weapons
    Mouse-wheel Up: Translocator
    Mouse-wheel Down: Shield gun

Mzo, screw TNL. Actually! Kush also has a uvote server, which would be an excellent place to meet if, by some twist of fate, a bunch of TNLers want to throw down in some DM or TDM.

  2. I still play, I usually hang at Cain's Lair CTF server.

Anyway playing DM is the best way to improve your game. Read this for some tips, I ignored a lot of it though. I think my FOV is set to 110. I also use ESDF and have a key for every weapon like mode7 suggested. Only exception is the assault rifle, as I would pick the shield gun over it in almost every situation.

I presume you folks read about the Editor's Choice Edition, which will be a free d/l for anyone who already owns UT2k4.

  3. thanks for the alternate key bindings, mode. i was just about to reset everything myself. the default layout is horrible.

question: when i was on kush's server, i saw a few people running very fast. it happened too often to be an adrenaline rush. was it just the dodge forward + jump trick, or am i missing something?

in other news, i played a bit of regular ctf today. CTF-FaceClassic. amazingly, i was in the top 25% for the first few games. they probably weren't very good, but it's nice to do well once in a while.

  4. was it just the dodge forward + jump trick, or am i missing something?
Yep, but there's a trick within the trick when it comes to doing it properly. I'd recommend watching this video:

    http://www.awservers.com/HowToJump.zip

But I would not recommend his method for boost dodging; learn how to do that shit properly. It isn't that tough, and it'll save you a case of carpal tunnel.

I'm always up for some vanilla CTF, btw.

  5. k, the faster moving bit is easy, but i'm not too clear on the rest. what exactly is boost dodging? a double-jumped wall-rebound (ie. jump at a wall, double tap off the wall, then do your second jump)? i can do that fine, but it seems much easier than he makes it out to be, so i must be doing something wrong.

i've been playing ctf on and off for the past few days to build some basic combat skills. still having problems with mouse sensitivity, but i'm getting a bit better. one thing that amazes me is how goddamn efficient everyone is with the translocator, even using it in the middle of a rocket duel!

  6. what exactly is boost dodging?
Think of it as a jump+wall-dodge+jump (like what you mentioned) except that it actually gains you height. Here's a quick Deck17 demo:

    http://symphony.gamersgraveyard.com/boostjump.demo4

"demoplay boostjump" in your console to play. Hit F4 to view it in 3rd person. This is a great place to practice boost dodging, since you aren't getting up on that box unless you've performed the jump correctly.

Depending on what skin you use, you can also gain cues from the animation. The one I use, Mars Attacks Martian, is great because he only tucks into the roll if I've done the boost dodge properly. Again, great for practice in 3rd person.

    The method I use is:

    jump at wall
    direction + jump
    direction + jump

I had problems at first because I didn't realize how quickly after your first jump you need to start banging on those keys. I'm fairly consistent with it now, though.

  7. i can't get that demo to play. it crashes my game every time i try to load it. other demos i made work fine. strange.

in any case, thanks for the clarification. i'll give it another go.

edit: nevermind, the demo works fine. i didn't have the third patch installed. didn't think i'd be able to join games with an outdated patch..

  8. aight, i've practiced for a bit and came up with this.

thing is, i don't ever press jump at the same time as a direction key. it seems to work if i jump at a wall, instantly do a wall dodge with three presses of the direction, and then jump a second time. as far as i can tell, the results are the same. do you see any obvious problems?

  9. Alright, now I'm confused. Maybe wall-dodge+jump is the same thing as boost dodge. Which would be fine with me, since it's one hell of a lot easier to do than what other people have been describing to me. Will investigate further.

well, it's not exactly the same thing, as i can't get on top of the box with a regularly timed wall jump. i think you get the extra height from starting the dodge extra early.

update: i can now easily do the boost dodge with a regular wall-dodge (ie. no double-tap.) you have to start the wall dodge immediately after jumping at the wall. the trick is in the timing of the second jump. you have to press it at the apex of the wall-dodge. just practice a bit, it's not too hard.
