Difference being that SNES games were good.

Hey, if the PSP has some unique software I really want, I'll bite. I'm just saying that the graphics aren't going to sell it to me.

The GBA also offers a substantially different gaming experience from the what's available at home. The PSP does not, at least not yet.

Counting GGXX, I think three games out of hundreds would qualify as "dire straits." That's called an exception to the rule, of which there is for every law. Don't try saying 2D is alive and well when evened out we're getting one 2D game per year on consoles in the US (and only one of those features 2D graphics even worth praising, also showing how little cash gets put into them).

Hell, I think we get more translated Korean MMORPGs then that.

    Pwned by the truth.

I really hope they re-release Sentient on this thing.

Seriously, though, that's a damn impressive-looking demo there. I want a bigger-than-the-GBA screen, though... I want a too-big-to-fit-in-my-pocket-and-is-then-rendered-useless-as-as-portable screen on this bad boy.

The screen probably won't be TOO small, it shouldn't be that radically different from playing something on the portable PSX LCD screen. But it's still gonna be pretty tiny and will take some getting used to playing something in 3D on the go on a screen that small like that.

This is assuming Sony doesn't release the thing at the $400+ prices early estimates have had the hardware at, and it's tough enough that it won't break after little Johnny drops it on the playground the day after his mom plops down the cash for it.

If it is gonna be pricey, I get the feeling Sony will be pushing it towards the late-teen and twenty-something iPod crowd who will hopefully treat it more responsibly and concede the kid's market to Nintendo.

In any case, it's nice to see some actual software finally running for the system, it's definitely looking more intriguing now...
    omg TNL epics!

  6. You've never seen the way most 20-year olds treat their iPods, have you? ^^

It's like Jimmy, except they'll blindly go out and buy another after breaking it.

Besides, I'm sure Sony wants that kind of crowd; imagine selling 2 - 3 of these to hipsters who are too damn stupid to have a little care for their toys. Then again, they might pull an Apple, and have the battery die out after 18 months, and tell customers "buy a new PSP." Or who knows? Maybe we'll get the Sony brand of hardware excellence, and the disk drive will go nuts after 6 months, or the board will overheat.

    I can't wait for Christmas...

  7. Well, E3 will be a huge time for it, as we'll probably find out the price. The first week-month or so of the system's life should tell us if any big flaws come up shortly after launch, like defective parts and such. And the first couple of years should tell us if these things will be made to last.

  8. The PSP screen will be 4.5" with an aspect ratio of 16:9 and a resolution of 480x272. The GBA screen is 2.9" with an aspect ratio of 3:2 and a resolution of 240x160 for comparison.

I only play my GBA because it still manages to offer "oldschool-ish" gameplay and games be it 2d or quasi 3d, not because it's portable. If the PSP is going to try and offer the same full blown games one finds on consoles, then I'm out of the portable market. I wouldn't wanna play such games on a portable.

As for the game itself, it doesn't look interesting and it's hard to tell how powerful the PSP's graphic cababilities are with a game that has such a look.Meh.

  10. Maybe if fully 3D games don't work on the thing we'll see a 2.5D boom. Crash Bandicoot, Contra SS, Strider 2, Rival Schools, games like that'll be the Castlevanias and Metroids of the PSP. Or not, I dunno. It looks impressive, that video alone makes me think someone like Square could easily port Kingdom Hearts to it. I'm not interested in it unless they make it so you can play it on a tv screen, and then it's just something close to another PS2 I have to buy from Sony. Last I read, there's something like 80-100 developers allready making games for it, so there'll probably be some killer app that makes me buy it even though I don't like handhelds:/
