If I had to guess they would have been my top pick. They're also bringing SMT3 which I never thought would get a US release. Now if they would only pick up Atelier Iris, they would be the greatest company on earth.Originally Posted by RedCoKid

I've never been really interested in this game. After watching the trailer for it it seems like it could be fun, but still... I'll keep an eye on it. Give it the benefit of the doubt.

I want my games that are released in 2004 to look like they were released in 2004. This is not unreasonable. This game will be relegated to the bargain bins a week after it comes out and Atlus will lose a lot of money for supporting it. Big mistake on their part.
If Toby Gard has come up with such an amazing gameplay system after toiling for six fucking years you'd think he would at least respect his product enough to make it look the part.
Agreed.
I'll decide if the graphics are good after I get some hands-on time with the game, whether via demo or owning it. Until then I'm not going to make a call off of still screenshots. If you only see a still shot of a game's graphics then you're only seeing half of what they've got to show.
Within limits, of course. No force on earth is going to make sprite enemies in Doom look any less like they're made of flat legos. On the other hand, though I wouldn't exactly marvel at the technical prowess on display I can still have a good time with Descent 2 and not sweat the polygonal chunkiness on display. Hi-res 3D-accelerated Descent 2, of course.

The way I look at it, all a game boils down to is graphical interpritation. The gameplay is expressed to you with graphics. If they aren't in some way pleasing or atleast decent, the whole experience is shit as far as I'm concerned. Games can look ok and have great paly and be amazing (Metal Slug 3), or be low tech but have style and spunk (Disgaea), but if they can only look so bad before they simply aren't playable anymore.
this looks unplayable.
Well, you can forgive any lacking graphics in Doom or Metal Slug 3 because the art design is strong and consistent - Doom has a sort of retro flair that is charming nowadays. Disgaea looks cute I suppose which can work for some as well.
But this game just looks terrible. Not only are the characters low-poly but they look horrendous. The art design is awful. The environments themselves are simple and flat, and look sub-Ultima IX quality. I dont even think this would've passed for good in 1998. It looks like bottom of the barrel first-gen 3Dfx Glide games.
This is just not acceptable for a game released in 2004. Like I said if the game really does play well it would be a shame that they cared so little about the aesthetics.
So Metal Slug looks "okay" and Disgaea is "low-tech".Originally Posted by Opaque
Ugh.
By the way, unplayable and graphics should NEVER have anything to do with each other. Pong will ALWAYS be playable, and the graphics will ALWAYS be ass. As if everything on older systems is "unplayable". Good greif.
Some people get spoiled at times in their lives and are grateful, knowing they could still enjoy life with less, others stay spoiled for life, and if things don't meet their expectations on all fronts, it's hissy fit times. We have all been spoiled with good graphics, that doesn't mean we need to throw a hissy fit when they don't meet our standards. Note to yourself "this is unatractive" and give the gameplay, music, story, control, art direction, etc. a shot.
Jeebus.
This used to be the realm of the jaded "2D games rule" fans, and now it is the home of the jaded "hollywood production values" crew. I'm not sure if that is better or worse.
PS: And yes, I realize the art direction is ass too. I'm still buying the game.
Undoubtedly it is better. This used to be the realm of the jaded "2D games rule" fans, and now it is the home of the jaded "hollywood production values" crew. I'm not sure if that is better or worse.
But anyway, I have no problem with Pong looking like shit because it was released like 32 years ago. I do have a problem with Galleon looking like shit because it is being released in 2004.
