Thread: I have a PC Engine. Now what?

  1. Drac-X is a Super-CDROM game. The Duo contains the necessary hardware to run such games. The Japan-only Arcade Card is only required for a very small subset of the system's library. No real must-haves in there, IMO.

Also, if you really must play import Hucards, you might want to consider getting a US Duo with a switch mod. (It already plays all regions of CD software.) The converters are somewhat pricey now.

I'll start off with US and all region CD stuff, I guess. Thanks for the info.

I'll consider the switch (I find switch mods sexy), but if a PCE costs far less than a mod, I might go that route.

  3. Matt modded my Duo for around $35 and it's awesome. I can finally play Operation Wolf and Download!

    Some domestic titles I'd recommend:

    - Dragon's Curse (Wonder Boy!)
    - Ninja Spirit
    - Bonk's Adventure
    - Blazing Lazers
    - Tiger Road
    - Legendary Axe
    - Ordyne
    - Gate of Thunder (CD2)
    - Neutopia
    - Splatterhouse
    - Ys Book 1&2
    - Monter Lair

    Imports:

    - Operation Wolf (Almost arcade perfect!)
    - Download
    - Final Soldier
    - Ys4

...and the one no TG owner should be without: Dracula X. Find it. Spend the cash. You will love every minute of it. Read my review too!

  4. That's Lazers with a Z, buddy.

  5. Oops, edited!

    Don't beat me up!

Do all those games have that arcade feel? It is very important to me. That and the fact that this CD system was released BEFORE Sega's.

Hmmm, arcade feel from PCE games... Not really. It's not a very powerful system. Think the NES with slightly bumped up graphics and sound (the PCE originally came out in Japan long before the TG16 came out here). The PCE has a nice unique feel to it in general, and is home to some seriously killer games. But don't expect to be blown away or anything (except for Drac X, that game really is fuckin killer).

I would say it's much more than slightly above NES graphics. The TG16 is noticeably more powerful than the SMS too.

  10. Crap! I forgot I had Ninja Spirit. That's an awesome game. Thanks to everyone who made recommendations. Problem is, right now, my TG16 is at home and my PCE is here... so I have no access to my US games right now. Well, semester's over in a few weeks, and when that happens, I'm going to hit eBay up and increase both my US and Japanese libraries... and once I'm holding down a job there, I'll probably pick up a Duo of some sort. Hopefully a Duo R or RX, because I love white hardware.

Doubt I'd do any mods of any kind to any of them, but the PCE I bought off of eBay does have a RCA mod, which is pretty nifty.

I wish I could buy more hucards around here, though. The only place I've seen with any wanted $50 each for two games I had never heard of... and the rest were overpriced CD titles. Hmm.
