This might be the show that forces me to get HBO.
I love Westerns and the old West. About time somebody made a decent show about this time period.
No Deadwood thread? For shame!
For the uninitiated, this is the latest HBO series looking to grab the attention of viewers who can't get enough (or perhaps have had enough) of Sopranos, Six Feet Under, and Carnivale.
This western is set in Deadwood, South Dakota in 1876. The town (barely more than a camp) has sprung up due to a gold rush in the Black Mountains, drawing in prospectors, opportunists, and plenty of more unsavory types. The rub is that Deadwood is on an Indian reservation, and exists outside the law. At the center of things are: former Montana Marshall, Seth Bullock; his business partner, Sol Star; scheming saloon/casino/brothel owner, Al Swearengen; and a somewhat worn-out, yet still deadly, Wild Bill Hickok play by Keith Carradine.
The series weaves historical accounts (Bullock, Hickok, Calamity Jane and the other central characters were all there in 1876) with embellished (i.e., fictional) story lines. The story unfolds in a very gritty, unglamorous style, with plenty of plotting, rutting, backstabbing (literally), and a fair amount of abrupt gunplay.
I've seen all 3 episodes thus far and find the series to be pretty engaging. HBO is showing the first 3 episodes back-to-back-to-back this Friday, just in time to settle in for the 4th episode on Sunday.
Westerns aren't exactly the rage these days, so I give some credit to HBO for putting this together.

It's like other Westerns, only more explicit. It seems pretty good though. For some reason, HBO seems pretty good at capturing a period. They did the 30s expertly in Carnivale and now they've brought the West to life with Deadwood.
The story so far is pretty interesting, I'm just not sure where it's going.
Time for a change
I don't know if I like this show or not. Some of the characters in it are really cool like Hicock and Montana, but some of the others annoy me, like Calamity Jane and the guy who runs the inn who was also the guy who did the voice of carl rossum in the batman animated series. And there's something really strange about seeing cowboys saying things like "cock sucker".
Ironically most of the slang we use today DID originate in that time period.
Time for a change
Carradine is really credible as the aging Hickok. I kind of like Calamity Jane, but I'm hoping her involvement in the story moves beyond non-stop cursing. I'd settle for her killing someone --anyone--in the very near future.Originally Posted by Regus
The guy who runs the inn was also in Blade Runner, playing the engineer with the aging disease. He was annoying as fuck back then, too. I take solace in my assumption that he is a walking dead man.

Uhm...yea, my head is stuffy...I'm gonna go lay down.
I got cable for two things:
High Definition Channels
HBO
And now that HBO has an HD channel I am REALLY getting into all their shows. I love the Sopranos, Six Feet Under, Carmivale, but for some strange reason I have never watched a single episode of Deadwood. I keep telling myself to wait until it is out on DVD. Maybe when my are gets onDemand I'll watch all the episodes and get up to speed.
By the way, why do I hear so little about it? I always hear buzz about the other HBO shows, even Sex in the City and that show sucks.
This and The Sopranos are the best TV shows out there. I may even like Deadwood more, and I'm a huge Soparnos fanboy.
Last nights episode was crazy...
Wild Bill getting blasted was a total shocker that I didn't see coming at all - especially as the entire ep. was almost all him and dealing with the windower.
Crazy.
If I had to make an early guess as to how the show is going to develop:
I'd say that Montana is going to do something about bringing the law to Deadwood (from him being Sherif in the first episode), and I'm guessing Calamity Jane will probably stick around.
The entire Wild Bill thing, plus Montana seeing all the other bad stuff happening in Deadwood seems like he's getting pushed in that direction.
