Say you got a linear gradient going from "blue to red".

You then got everyone to mark out where blue becomes purple and when purple becomes red.

Would they all be exactly the same?

Of course, the frequency which only excites red photorhodopsins is absolute red. But red is a concept larger then just one discrete frequency. And that's only in the human mind.

In reality there is no colour, just an infinite amount frequencies. The only thing in the universe that "groups" these frequencies are the molecules at the back of your eye.
To this I will say that we can never understand the universal truth "red" differently; we can only misunderstand it differently.

To be very honest, I don't care that they cut the Dursley's. I appreciate Harry's home life, but every time I begin one of the books, I find myself wishing it was over that much sooner . . . and the Dursley's bits seem to get longer with each book.

I am, however, extremely disappointed that they're cutting the QWC. Is that confirmed, or simple rumor?

We actually miss out on important plot points without the QWC. We miss nothing if the OWLs and Dursley's are cut. At least, that's how I'm justifying it.

I agree. I started this horse-shit (and for all the wrong reasons, as bbobb was so kind to point out), so I am hereby ending it.

Harry Potter from here on out.

For the record, I don't much care about the Dursley's either. I was just using it as an example to try and make my point.

The Quidditch cut is just a rumor, AFAIK.

I'm really just upset with they way things seemed to leap around in the third movie. As was said earlier, these movies need to be longer. The fan base will watch the movies, regardless of length, I think. Don't get me wrong.. I enjoy watching deleted scenes, and a "director's cut" is always nice, but if scenes are integral to the movie, they should be in it the first time around.

I agree about the extended editions, though.
OWLs take place in Order of the Pheonix, and it would really suck if they cut any of them out, they're too important to not do them. And all that stuff they do to prepare for them is great, a lot of people can relate to the things they go through.

Except that we're going to miss out with the Dursley meeting the Weaslys, which I thought was hilarious. I also love the part about the letter mrs. weasly sends the dursleys, it's a shame we wont get to see that.

So what exactly is this immovable absolute difference between a photon with a wavelength of 425nm and a photon of wavelength 740nm; that would exist even if humans or animals with chroma rhodopsins didn't exist?
Quick zephyrs blow, vexing daft Jim.

  7. a) Veggie, you'd be getting a lot less guff had you said "Official." That's all ya needed, really.

    b) Rowling may very well see the character differently, it's no less "real" than the way I see it. I'm only going off of her description of a fake person, anyway. She created him in her mind so I could recreate him in mine. That's how books work, so says everyone but you.

    c) "My" blue is not "your" yellow. If anything like that were going on, we'd all be going about how no one's clothes matched but our own. Solves that.

    d) I always imagined Lupin as looking very much like TNL's very own Nick. Don't ask me why... I imagine Nick an unhealthy ammount of the time, anyway. He's dreamy.
So I forced my hands in my pockets and felt with my thumbs and gallantly handed her my very last piece of gum.

I don't think you understand fully on what we're talking about. You accept your reality. If I saw everybodys' face as your blue and the sky as your red, I wouldn't see it as strange, it would be normal to me. Blue is seen as calming and cold, Red is seen as envigerating and hot; but those associations are still abstract. But they don't come from redness or blueness, they orginate from associations between the frequencies we see as red and blue.

    Same thing with asthetics.

Look, I personally think that different wavelengths are respresented practically the same in all humans, sans Monet-style degeneration. But still, it's not impossible. However, it's impossible to test, unless of course we could emulate neural connections.

Anyway, the fact is colours don't exist in reality, they are a classification created by the animal mind to represent different frequencies reflected off different molecules.

    Anyway, Siruis rocks w00t!

  9. Saw it last night and liked it, but a little confused on one or two things. Maybe some of you who've read the books can clear this up:

Why did Black attack the fat lady in the painting if he was actually a good guy? Why did he look like a raving lunatic in all of his wanted posters?

  10. the dementors run azkaban. i'm sure they're enough to make anyone insane. that photo was probably taken when he first got there, as he later found a way to keep them from affecting him.
