Thread: Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban - Official Thread

  1. I hear book six will have something to do with Harry's eyes. All throughout the series everyone comments on how he looks like his father, except his eyes. He has his mother's eyes. It shows up in every book. I hear it's going to have something to do with that.

I'll echo the fact that you aren't the only one waiting. The scene at the Ministry of Magic in book five is one of the best, most tense, most action packed scenes in all of literature. I really want to see it on screen.

Really? I thought that scene was really weak. Could have been a lot better. I hope they don't portray Harry as too much of Luke Skywalker whiner in the OotP movie. He was a real tool in book 5, he better cut that shit out out for 6.

  3. I don't want to get in this too far again, since I want it to just die. But, the painting primary colours are based on the fact the Ochres, Alizarin, and Indigo are all deep reds, deep yellows, or deep blues. The real Human primary colours are based on the fact we have red, green, and blue cones. So do you have any trouble making a physical primary colour such as green out of a physical secondary colour such as yellow? The fact is, the colour spectrum is continuous, and any system which involved three colours spaced out evenly across the gradient would be able to fairly accurately reproduce any colour on it. Same goes for pigments.

Have you read the books at all?
Yeah, I've read them all, and they are easily my most favourite series of books. The strange thing is, I generally dislike fantasy books (yet love mythology, go figure), but I think JK Rowling's excellent writing just drew me in bigtime. I think the series peaked at Azkaban, and Gary Oldman is one of my favourite actors, so I'm really looking forward to the movie.

I'm more worried about four. The Kappas better look like videogame Kappas, and they better not try to cram the whole book in two hours.
Quick zephyrs blow, vexing daft Jim.

Are you sure man? It is plausible that he (Lupin) did it, but I just reread the book, and nowhere does it mention that. Black's name is all that's bandied around.
    "Tick-tock"

  6. I think it was supposed to imply that Sirius did it. Ron mentioned how he was in the dorm, holding a knife over him or something...? This would make sense if he were looking for Scabbers, and why the portrait was gashed (knife slashes).

That's what me and my friends have always assumed, anyway.

Yeah. I think the way it went is that Ron was clinging to Scabbers, and Sirius was looming over him with a knife, targeting Scabbers, of course, but Ron thinks he's aiming for him (with good reason), and we don't realize he was after Scabbers until the endgame.

It was definitely Black who cut up the Fat Lady's painting.

Do you mean like Kapp'n "video game Kappas?"
That would rock my face off.

You do know that Kappas are vampiric, right? And that they suck human blood through the anus, right? They're also very, extremely polite, and if you bow to them (being Japanese, of course) they're bound to bow back, spilling the water out in the hollow of their head, and in so doing, binding themselves to grant you three wishes. They're like Dracula, the Creature from the Black Lagoon and the Djinni all rolled into one! Except for that whole "anus" thing. *shudder*

To be honest, I don't remember Kappas in the book. I remember the Merfolk in the lake that Harry and the other three students need to dive into the rescue their "most important person," but I can't seem to remember the Kappas. Refresh my memory (before I make a fool out of myself again )?

Yes, it was just a plain old utilitarian decision, helped along by his rage. Slash a painting that can be fixed, or miss killing/capturing someone who is the reason your best friends are dead, and is now helping the killer possibly gain enough power to kill your godson and many others. Plus, lets be realistic, it's a device used (with the whole knife-Ron thing) to make Sirius seem REALLY evil.

Oh yeah, I got confused with the Merfolk. I'm sure kappas are in the books somewhere, possibly just mentioned in a lesson

    EDIT: Found it.

PoA Ch.8: "From Red Caps they moved on to Kappas, creppy water dwellers that looked like scaly monkeys, with webbed hands itching to strangle unwitting waders in their pond"

Red Caps and Kappas in one sentence ^_^

  10. Saw the movie last night, great stuff. Easliy the best one so far.

Astro, Cpt Veg, & everyone else involved in this purely speculative (thus truly endless) argument have shit all over this thread. I don't have enough patience to go however many pages required to find actual discussion of the fucking movie. Boo.
