Thread: City of Heroes

  1. City of Heroes

Being a semi-retired comic book geek, this kind of interestes me.
Has anybody heard/read anything about it?
I've yet to jump ionto a MMORPG, and this might be cool.

  2. I paid barely any attention to this game at last years E3 where they had a pretty nice booth and there was some buzz about it. Read about the different "classes" at http://www.cityofheroes.com/. It pretty much covers the gamut of superheroes/origins (mutants, magic, radiation, etc). And the customization of the chars seem limitless though I'm not a huge fan of the char models used. I am unsure if you can be a villain or if there is PvP. My favorite superhero game to date is Freedom Force and I can't wait for the sequel this year but if City of Heroes can deliver on it's promises I'd give it a shot.

  3. My brother is in the beta. He thinks its shaping up to be pretty cool. There is no PVP at all apparently, and you cannot become a super-villan...yet. He says it looks great with an impressive draw-distance. I'll paste up an email he sent me about the game once I get his permission...

Well, you could create a character who is a wolfman who is shaved down...or as John Talbain in human form...or a crazy guy who thinks he is a werewolf...

It's just not the same though
or a crazy guy who thinks he is a werewolf...
Hey are you implying something here... I guess dreaming is sort of like thinking

  8. I'm in the beta

    The Good:
-The battle system is fantastic. If you're looking for another press one key then sleep MMORPG, steer clear from this. You don't have an auto attack, a normal attack, or anything that you'll have to press once. It's all skills (or as they say, powers).
-There are a lot of powers. Combat powers, healing powers, and other powers. Gadgets like web grenades and caltrops, and also flying, super leap, and super speed.
-The graphics are gorgeous. Though many of the city areas may look similar, they are very well done. The mission environments are very awesome as well and become even more diverse as you level up. You start off fighting gangsters in warehouses and later you'll end up fighting nazis (5th column) in an underground base, or pirates of the sky in secret labs. You won't find grainy textures all over the place in this game. A lot of the enemies also look very cool. As mentioned before, there's nazis, pirates and gangsters. There's also ninjas, mafia, undead, and many more.
-The best character creator I have ever witnessed. Though it isn't as complex as some would like, there are so many options and so many possibilities for characters to make. This makes it so that probably every single person you see looks unique.
-The only items you will ever get are inspirations (like short-term power-ups) and enhancements (things to put in your skills/powers to make them better).
    -You can fly.

    The Bad:
-Though I don't really care for it, some obviously do care about PvP. There is none, and there currently are no short-term plans for PvP
-Trade skills. They're boring as shit, but they keep the game diverse and are a nice break from mindless killing. There are no trade skills in this game.
-On the surface, there really isn't anything to do other than kill something, kill something else, and then kill something more. It's easy to get tired of doing the same thing over and over.
-No one knows too much about the endgame. It sounds similar to some of the EQ endgame. There are apparently trial zones (or one trial zone so far) with an extremely powerful monster, but I don't know really how they work.

I'm not sure if this game can last. Even with all the flaws it's probably one of the best out there right now because even though it doesn't seem to have much, what it has is phenomenal.

  9. What I'm thinking about this game is that it won't have the lasting power of other MMOs after the novelty of making your own superheroes wears out. I mean apart from going through the pre-defined adventures with groups of your friends, it doesn't seem like the gameplay has anything else... no need to explore, no need to progress, in essence, nothing to shoot for except getting to the next adventure.

Really, it seems like a online version of Freedom Force could pull much of the same stuff.

  10. City of Heroes

City of Heroes comes out this week and I'm wondering who is going to be playing it.

Apparently it's extremely fun and the character creation is so intense you can create anything and anyone.

I think I'm going to pick it up. Sounds like a lot of fun.

    Maybe I'll make a yellow spider-man and say I'm Spider-mans brother-in-law.
