Maybe it's stating the obvious, but the more I play it, the more Echoes feels like a horror game in sci-fi trappings. From the start, with the hanging bodies and reanimated soldiers, there's been a palpable sense of dread. It's not horror in terms of in-your-face gore, but rather of having the feeling there's something evil lurking around every corner, or even right in front of you, even though you can't see it.
The first Prime has a strong feeling of isolation, but with an almost constant wonder. Echoes has been menacing since the first time Samus sees Aether from space, being threatened by the encroaching darkness of the Ing, and it gets worse the farther she progresses.
She's alone once again, and retains all her bad-assness, but I think Aether scares her like nothing she's ever seen, even when she's in the light.
Progressing slowly, much like I did in the first Prime, because there's so much to take in, from the detail to the design to the atmosphere.

When is it set?
Quick zephyrs blow, vexing daft Jim.
After Prime. Might not "Scare her like nothing she's ever seen," but it's a different feel.
sometime after MP from everything ive read. dont know if theres an exact timeline since i have yet to play it.
Didn't someone say there was a timeline somewhere earlier in this thread?
Edit - I guess that was some other game. Or wait, was it on the demo disc?
Was that a different game?Originally Posted by Chux

and it's freaking awesome I'm loving it
I'm about 6 hours in and I'm in love with this game. Metroid is such a special franchise, it doesn't have that "5 months until Metroid!!!!!!" hype appeal but when the game does come out and you're playing it, it's hard to imagine any other game being as much fun. I think the downer of beating a Metroid game is involved in the psychology of anticipating the next one, in a way you're trying to avoid the withdrawal after it ends.
For all the talk of this being "more of the same", it's actually very different from the first Prime. It's much more dark and feels almost like a survival horror game (except the gameplay is fantastic).
Just because this game doesn't have millions of pimple faced 13 year olds in a frenzy jacking cars or fragging each other online doesn't mean it's not one of the best games of the year, if not the best game of the year.
Cowutopia: I think most people that hate Nintendo are in that age group where they're too young to fondly remember the glory days of the NES, but just old enough to be afraid that being into Nintendo games will drive away women. Most Nintendo fans seem to be young kids or adults that grew up with NES. In another thread just today I got called impotent for owning a GameCube, I'm still trying to figure that one out.
