Too bad Sega's giving us another Shining Force instead. :P

Oh well, there's always Front Mission/Fire Emblem/Nippon Ichi...

  3. I'd love to see a compilation of the Shining Force III scenarios. I've only played the US Saturn version.

The new version for the PS2 has me excited.

What color is the sky where Front Mission is better than Shining Force? Candy cane striped perhaps?

Blue. I like the addictive customization, stat building and micromanagement in games like Front Mission, the Ogre Battle Saga and Nippon Ichi's stuff but I also enjoy the purer brutal strategic battling in stuff like Fire Emblem. Shining Force has traditionally tried to tried to find that middle ground between the two (which is a great idea) but in actual practice just ends up doing both sides rather mediocre. It's a dumbed down, easy Fire Emblem with more character emphasis essentially, a C+/B- level series at best. The only reason it's so cherished in the west is Sega having the intestinal fortitude to actually bring a SRPG over, nostalgia does the rest.

While I disagree completely, I applaud jarrod's ability to back up his opinion.

  9. They are different types of games, even though they are both strategy games they are far different themes

  10. Well, I'm probably being just a bit hard on Shining Force. I'd say the series is actually a solid "B" but the Shining franchise in general brings it down a notch (I've never been fond of the dungeon crawlers and Wisdom was pretty flawed to put it nicely).
