Thread: Official Spiderman 2 thread

  1. The Spiderman franchise is the epitome of superhero movie, and every other film maker should take a note from them. It's not about the powers until the fight scene, it's about the people who weild them.

You proved to him that he should like the movie? And how exactly does that work?

The movie tried to be two things, a personal movie and a super hero movie. To do that, it compromised on both accounts. Perhaps the first movie is immensly better simply because it had better material to work with. Peter becomes spidy, kicks Goblin's ass, the end. The story for the second one pretty much had to take place, especially since Spidey 3 is in the pipeline. But unfortunately, to do it they compromised a lot and ended up with a forced movie with characters that just aren't very believable. I simply was not convinced of MJ's and Peter's love, or Harry's hatred.

  3. Just got back from seeing it a couple hours ago, and I gotta say the special-effects were definitely improved over the first film. Going from live-action to CG was seemless and not as jarring as the first and, in some scenes, it was hard to distinguish between the two.

The only gripe I have is the roller-coaster emotions this flick has. It goes randomly from light comedy to thrilling action to depressingly slow melodrama several times. I understand the need to focus a little on the Peter/MJ relationship and to have a bit of Uncle Ben guilt sprinkled here and there - but some of these scenes spent way too much time on these plot-points that could've been better used explaining more of Doc Ock's dementia, or of Peter's loss of power or - better yet - a bit more of Dr. Connors' backstory so the inevitable arrival of the Lizard in one of the sequels won't be hindered by too much backtracking.

Other than that minor irritation - great movie. I'll just think of his wonky Spider-Sense throughout the movie as just another one of his powers that were beginning to fail him.

  4. Wow.
    This movie blew me away.

The first movie raised the bar for comic book movies, this one launched into outer space. I can't forsee anything topping this any time soon. It was so perfect in every way. The way they protrayed spiderman was wonderful and very relatable.

The train sequence was so powerful, I've got no problems saying that I had tears in my eyes at the end of it.

Any one who says this movie is anything but fantastic is out of their minds.

    AGREED.

I think anyone who hates this movie needs to get out and off their fat ass once in a while to see the sun. WHY? Because you watch too many fucking movies to be so damn overly critical about the smallest things.

Umm... his points were flawed due to cited examples I gave? Saying something has loop holes or badly written when it was well written for a reason is a huge flaw in logic.

  7. The train scene, despite some incredible cheese, was one of the most powerful scenes I've ever seen in a film, especially with a huge audience. Worth the price of admission alone, and by itself better than the entire first movie (okay, maybe not, but close ). The scene from the trailers, with Doc Oct throwing the car into the resteraunt, was also great and was much better as a whole scene than the snippet from the trailer. The only thing I wasn't impressed with, was that for some reason a lot of the web-slinging, GC-Spidey scenes seemed actually worse than the original for some reason, maybe the animation just didn't seem as smooth/realistic, or maybe it's just gotten easier to recognize, I dunno. He also seemed, somehow... brighter during the CG, in actual color I mean. Those small squabbles aside, the movie was fantastic.
Buy Yakuza and Oblivion. Help yourself, help TNL.

I hardly ever watch movies. Ever. That's probably why my standards are so high. I think this movie simply boils down to people set their standards low merely because this is a super hero movie. Had that level of character development, conflict and acting been presented in a drama, it'd be considered a mediocre or even terrible movie.

Oh, see I guess he didn't realize everyone banded together and decided this movie was well written. Silly guy, thinking he can have his own opinion on the quality of the writing!

  9. Just got back from seeing it. The train scene was amazing. I'll remember that one for a long time. Overall very good, but I'm deducting points for horrible CGI in too many spots and some really bad lines. Can't complain about the action though. Playstation-esque models or not, those were some good fights.

    You're a wise guy.

When everything is explained in a logical fashion, and everything progresses on screen (screen writing) without making you go "why the heck did that happen?" or "Why did this person do that?" then it's well written, technically. In order to be considered a masterfully written piece of work, you then ad undertones and nuances to scenarios and characters to make them lovable, or loathable. That's good writing.

It has nothing to do with opinion or people banding together for a meeting to decide what's good or not (probably with scones and coffee too). It's devoid of this nonsense. Example: I HATED Adaptation, but still see and understand why so many people love that movie. And I can admit that it had good screenplay and character development that made the movie what it was.
