Thread: Shining Tears PS2

  1. Damn, you mean Sega sucks?

    Who knew?

  2. Shining Force NEO actually looks interesting in a Star Ocean 3 clone sort of way, but I doubt many people will buy it, much less pimp it as the return of Sega.

I'm sorry but, a Shining Force that's not a SRPG? Fuck you, SEGA.

What wouldn't suprise me; seeing as that we're dealing with Sega here, is that Shining Tears will tank in the US, and then Neo gets dropped from any consideration of translation.

  5. If NEO shapes up to look like it has no chance of selling in the US, then Sega will definitely publish it in the US.

  6. Anyone else pick this up? I have to say that I am totally against the reviews on this one. The game is a solid B-grade title (or I could accept C+ in some instances cause I am biased), but damn it is no where near the failure they made it out to be.

BIGGEST problem is that I am thinking reviewers didn't spend enough time with the game. The first couple of hours are all setup to get you your core team and setup the story etc. It is slow in the beginning. But once you have your team, the world opens up and you can level up/customize to your hearts content.

„ didn't notice a scrolling screen problem in the US version? I play on RGB monitor and it seems ok, there's a bit of blurriness when you scroll, but I see that in a lot of games on the PS2.

„ since when did story matter in Shining Force, honestly? The game was never complex, there were no towns to explore, etc. This game is old-school style.

„dialogue is a bit stilted, but I've experienced much much worse, though I have noticed a couple typos in the text, ouch!

„ load times are lame lame lame, but I am patient, so whatever...

„ Framerate is choppy, but artwork (backgrounds, character portraits, etc.) and sprites are very nice looking.

„ gameplay is simple but fun. 1 player Xion + selectable support character makes for a lot of differences in battle gameplay. You get a healer, mage, archer, dragon warrior, etc.

„ game retains the headquarters feel of old school Shining games but expands on it.

„ Level up provides assignable skill points and stat points, so you can customize your char and certain armor etc requires certain stats to use.

„ Link attacks and easy control of AI 2nd char make battles easy to manage.

„ pretty cool new feature, weapon creation -- you use elements dropped in battles to smith your weapon and make it into different tiers of weapons. So you take the normal sword and can eventually turn it into something really powerful. You can do the same with armor, headgear, etc.

I guess my whole thing is that it's a simple, nice break from say Xenosaga 2 which I am going through now. I never saw the Shining series as anything complex, and I like it that way. I'm not going to say that this breaks new ground or anything, but it is occupying my time nicely and I will play it all the way through.

  7. Well, that doesn't sound that bad at all! I will pick this game up after the price drops.

  8. thanks for those impressions ssbomberman, I missed these posts back in March. All the poor reviews had me pass over Shining Tears. And like a lot of other people I thought maybe I'd pick it up once the price droped. ..but it never did, and now I can't even find it new.
    but that's besides the point.
Shining Force Neo comes out today or tommorow. And I couldn't seem to find a thread dedicated to it.
I'm really itching to buy something new, I'm thinking SFNeo, Killer 7, or Wanda... Really though, I'd like to read some impressions about Neo because I don't have much faith in Sega anymore, so maybe Y's The Ark of Napishtim would be a better purchase for an Action-RPG fix.
