Thread: Spring, Summer, Autumn, Winter and Spring

  1. Spring, Summer, Autumn, Winter and Spring

Saw this Korean film over the weekend. It's essentially a Buddhist fable, tracking the lives of a monk and his pupil at various stages (hence, the seasonal reference) in their isolated "temple," which itself is the unsunken portion of an ancient barge located on an impossibly high and secluded mountain lake. Plenty of Buddhist symbolism emphasizing the cyclical nature of life, with some absolutely gorgeous cinematography.

Well worth checking out if you're in the mood for something a bit deeper (and more satisfying) than the latest 2-star pre-summer shite. Showings are probably limited to the more artsy film houses -- you know what I mean.
    "Fiends! Animals! Bastards!"

  2. I have been wanting to see it. Desperately needs a name change though.

  3. Saw it today. Excellent for students of or those who have an interest in Zen or Buddhism. I think I'm going to be watching this many times in the future, highly recommended.

I don't know if this is true, but I read in one review, I think it was on IMDB, that says that the director is actually a Christian and that the film is actually a critique of Buddhisim. However, I would say that, knowing what I know about the subject, I don't feel this to be the case, as it incorporates many themes of its subject matter quite skillfully.
