Thread: Mario vs Donkey Kong - Official Thread

  1. Well I'm on world 2 now (which looks a lot like the old DK JR game ), and so far it's pretty fun. It's not really difficult, nor is it very long (I count 6 worlds x 8 stages/world = 48 stages overall) but it's a pretty good game to play when you've got a bit of time to burn. Graphics kinda resemble KI on SNES in their pre-rendered & pixelated glory.

  2. Actually, cka, there are 18 worlds with 8 stages each. The booklet mentions the extra 6 worlds you get for completing the game, and six more that you "purchase" with the stars you win from getting the high score in any given level.

I was very happy when I read that. I was even more happy when the booklet mentions the difficulty increases exponentially per unlocked section of the game.

Looks like both the length and difficulty problems have been shot in the head.

I'm in as far as cka is, and I've been loving it. Only one stage has given me a high score problem (they want freaking 30,000 points on stage 1-5! 30,000!), but I'm really loving the game. The pre-rendered sprites are very clean, and the voices done for Mario are great. He even has his little mumblings from the Superstar Saga, too.

  3. I got that score on that level ;p

Anyway, anyone that says the game is too short really didn't read the manual. I read that too. No way can it be knocked for length. This is why I dislike reviews in general. A lot of the time, they are flat out wrong.

  4. I got the 30,000, too, after I decided not to kill all the Shy Guys with trash cans and actually collect on the hammer multiplyer. I was able to beat the mark by about 5,000 extra points.

  5. Just started playing the game today at the store. Regardless what the reviews say, I am still picking it up. There's a decent amount of unlockable material and the gameplay is a sweet combination derived from previous Mario and DK platform installments.

I wasn't really following the game up until the past two months and was suprised just how fun Mario vs. DK really is. Anyone who's whining about the game being short obviously put the game back on their shelf after beating it. Only the diligent players who go the extra mile will appreciate the rest that's in store for them.

Every GBA fan must pick this up. (I expect a High Score thread for this game to be created shortly).

Probably my favorite thing about this game so far.

I'm enjoying it. There is one enemy "Sir Shovealot," I believe his name is, who I can't tell what the hell he is excatly, but overall it plays really well.

Kind of funky to see such a nice molding of Super Mario Bros type gameplay infused with Donkey Kong 94, but it works.

  7. I loved DK94, it was so simple, yet so addictive, so I guess this is on my want list for now [still not owning a GBA].

  8. Was DK 94 even released in the States? And if so, for what system? I'd like to get a hold of it if possible.

CV I told you earlier, for the very original Gameboy, under the name Donkey Kong. It should be real cheap, I got my copy for 10 bucks.

Despite all my objections, upon hearing of longer gameplay and a harder difficulty, I bought it today for 20 bucks at Best Buy!

  10. It's thirty-freaking-five dollars at GS and EB.

I will be returning my copy and rebuying it at Best Buy.

Is there some kind of weird gift card trick I need to do, or is it the straight up price?
