Maybe I should pick up that demo. Anyone tried it yet?
I've played a bit of it and the shooting is solid, if you're familiar with a two-stick system. As I've said before, the vehicle explosions are extremely satisfying, with flaming chunks flying everywhere. You can seamlessly go from running and gunning on the ground, jump up to rip the pilot out of a helicopter, then zip around in the air. Virtually everything is destructible, although the terrain doesn't deform and the trees appear to be curiously resilent. There are some gameplay videos on Gamespot: http://www.gamespot.com/xbox/action/...ies/media.html.

Here's a quote from recently-canned XBN editor Che Chou:
You'd think that my post-Halo 2, post-Half-Life 2, post-MGS3 days would be an empty void of waiting for the "next big thing" but that hasn't been true at all. Although I was initially motivated to play these games through work, I've been finding all my time taken up by games such as Mercenaries and Ghost Recon 2 on Xbox Live. Both titles are perfect examples of games you can fully enjoy on your Xbox if you're (gasp!) sick of Halo 2. I know Mercenaries isn't out yet, but you will want to pick this one up. Imagine GTA set in a warzone without having to work your way up to getting a better gun every time. Or, imagine GTA without the fucked up on-foot shooting controls. I've been having a blast with Mercenaries.

  2. The game is coming out next week. if I wasn't still playing WOW I'd be really excited about all these games coming out.

  3. dj already asking me about it.

Crap, both Mercenaries and RE4 coming out next week. Plus I also have WOW addiction.

  4. I saw a commercial for this the other night. It looks pretty fuggin good.

52 missions though. I guess that's more than enough. The gamespot vids are rather good too.

Looks like something my pop might like.

The way I understand it there are 52 war criminals you have to bring down (a la the Iraqi playing card set), and how you do that is up to you.

Whether that means the game is totally open-ended or mostly mission-based, I don't know. But it sounds like the former (or at least I hope it is).

  6. I love the ads for it, and the footage I've seen of it has me excited. I'll either rent it soon or just get it on sale.

  7. The new OXM had a demo for it. I wasnt too excited for it until I played the demo. MUST BUY for me. Looks great and the variety is there. You can even kill or bash enemies and arrest them. Good stuff. Just based on the demo alone I can see upper 8s or 9s for reviews.

  8. Funny you should mention that, as PSM gave it an 8.

  9. I wonder how the PS2 version is. The Xbox version seemed pretty nice and smooth. One more week to go. I doubt I'll play this much until I finish RE 4 though.

  10. Tried the demo, certainly didn't diminish my desire to get this. Though the tank drove differently, and i couldnt figure out how to get the BMP to fire its cannon, and the helo I stole felt strange to fly. All of these I can get over though, just a matter of play time.
