I prefer manic shmups over methodical ones. I have two
troubles with methodical shmups. One, I could have
memorized the stages so well that I am guaranteed
survival--that bores me. Or two, I would have no clue how
to approach the stage, and I become discouraged. I like
how manic shmups keep my brain busy and my fingers moving.
Plus, I prefer to depend less on my memory and more on my
reflexes to survive.
I play manic shmups methodically, however. My
coordination's yet to match those of, say, top Japanese and
Hong Kong players. Because of this, I must depend on memory
to learn the enemy's behaviors. This way, I could lead
enemy's bullets away from me instead of frantically dodging
each bullet. It's still a thrill to play manic shmups,
because no matter how well I memorize one, I must also
depend on my reflexes to lead me to victory.
