Well, if you're first starting out...go with the Devastator or the Coyote.
Mzo loves the Dust Devil because of it's dual cannons...it packs a lot of ammo and is quite powerful once you've got a target in your sights.
The Doppleganger and Brigand are powerful (strong armor, making it hard for you to be taken down), but slow as hell. Use these only if you're comfortable with getting ganged up on by faster nimble planes.
When you get more experienced, I'd go with the Bulldog (the plane which nearly everyone's been using up until the new content came along). It's the fastest plane among the entire selection...but it's a softie when it comes to armor. You have to know how to run n' gun and have the maps down to a science --- knowing where all the health and ammo spots are located. I didn't bother mentioning the Fury because,...it sucks.
Start out in a stage like Arixo or something to get used to the controls. Chicago is one of my favorite stages and it's great for you so you can learn how to navigate through tight corners and buildings. And don't get frustrated, because you'll find that some people really are beasts in the game. Try going after stars if you want to raise your rank...and watch out for the lower ranked players, as they can lower your rankings. You'll start out as a Level 3 player and you'll raise or fall depending on your performance.
If you got any questions about the game modes, specifically Dogfight or Team Dogfight, just drop them here!
I really like that Vampire. I mean REALLY like it. I also love the new Gun Heist mode. The Firebrand is a cool plane too, but only because flying wings are cool, not because it's a good plane.
