It's a faithful port of the PC88 game. Yes, it's lame compared to the TGCD remake but so is the original. I'm not a big Ys fan myself anyway.

I've never seen the PC originals, and I didn't play the Master System version until after the vastly superior TG CD rev, so that accounts for my bias there.

Come on, not even III? How can you not like that soundtrack?

I did own Ys III(Genesis version) once upon a time. It was okay but I didn't like it enough to check out the other versions.

  4. Well, I'm just gonna add my two cents in here. I like the Ys series on the Turbo/PC-E..that being 1,2,3 and 4. Never played the Super Fami ones or the PS2 remake. Also on a side note, no need to dis the Sega CD. It had some good domestic games and some very good imports :P

3 was the oddball of the series.

  6. Yeah, it was the Y's Zelda II. Still really enjoyed it, though I kinda shudder at what the Genesis' sound processor would have done to that soundtrack.

Ever play the Famicom version? It doesn't treat the music too well either, heheh.

Yeah, I know. By "other versions" I meant of just Ys III.

You mean SuFami? It wasn't as good as the PC Engine version, but the instrumentation was still all Midi so the cart wasn't a hack job or anything. The Snes' sound chip was capable of some pretty impressive feats of audio with its sample modulators.

  10. I actually like the music in the Genesis version better. It's some of the better use of its sound capabilities in existence, and it sounds more lively than the music in the SFC version. Of course, both of those are inferior to the X68k and Duo versions (in gameplay and in music - the SNES and Genesis versions are comparatively broken as far as gameplay), but I digress.

I hope these games are treated well. The announcement made me recall how Falcom recently brought them to PC in an as-lazy-as-possible manner with emulated ROMs (for the Ys VI bonus disc), but I'm sure these will receive better treatments than that. It's about time, too...I and II have been remade quite enough times.
