Thread: Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events

  1. Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events

    http://www.unfortunateeventsmovie.com/

These were very... Interesting books. I know they were intended for children, but I read them anyway and I did enjoy them quite a bit. I was rather surprised to see that there was an upcoming movie adaptation.

Also, Jim Carrey playing several characters... I'm curious to see how well/poorly that will pan out. Lemony Snicket has some odd characters, and I'm not too confident in Carrey making them work well on the screen.

December 17th, so it's not too far off now.

  2. There's another movie coming out called Gardenstate that looks like it would be up your alley if you like this. I saw the preview for this and it looked alright, but Gardenstate looks more along the lines of Spotless Mind territory and that has me grinning in anticipation.

    Carrey is tied to this?

Good makeup job I guess. Oh and Carrey is an amazing actor who gets credit almost exclusively for his comedy, which is a dire shame. See his work on The Majestic and Spotless Mind as two examples. He'll be awesome, don't worry.

Also, some of the best movies in the last couple of years were childrens movies.

Pirates of the Caribbean, Finding Nemo, Shrek, Shrek 2, Harry Potter (all 3), etc. Not to mention the old classics like Lion King, Wizard of Oz, and The Grinch.

  3. I've never actually read these books, but I've always been interested in them. Maybe I'll stop by the book store tomorrow before D&D, as I now have a reason to read them.

  4. They're not bad, so long as you keep in mind that their intended audience is for nine year olds. That's not to say they're a simple read, though. I enjoyed them at any rate.

And I know Carrey can act outside of comedy. Just from the preview, I don't think he fits the character(s) well enough as I had imagined them. I get overly fickle about book-to-movie transitions, so if the actor doesn't fit how I think the character should be portrayed I tend to hate things ahead of time. I'll see later, I suppose.

  5. It will seldomly be 100% accurate to your minds eye portrayal of the character.

And most of the time your mind's eye portrayal of the character is wrong, anyway.

  7. Wrong? Books, until made into movies, are not a visual medium. It's just... different. Everyone see's and reads a book in their own way. I understand what you mean, perhaps wrong from the original looking standard the author wanted to portray, but that's why books are good.

I've never read these books and thought the preview was weird.

Hmm. The first one, at least, I didn 't care for at all. I just read it last week, and despite knowing the age group it was meant for, and reminding myself of that fact on numerous occasions, I felt like I was being talked down to the entire time.

Still, Carrey being cast is a stretch, I think. I don't see him as being any of those characters.
    "Tick-tock"

  9. He'll be wearing lots of costume from what those images garner. I doubt you'll even recognize him as most of them.

  10. I saw this last night. I have to say that I really enjoyed it all the way through.

Jim Carrey is truly phenominal as the ogreish Count Olaf, who is a mixture of fearsome and hilarious. Definitely the highlight of the movie, he succeeded in making me laugh more than a few times.

The movie actually is an adaptation to the first three books in the series, so while it ends with some closure, they leave it wide open for a sequel.

Surprisingly enjoyable, I really recommend you go see it.
