Chicago Sun Times TOKYO -- An 11-year-old girl led a fellow sixth-grader to an empty classroom during their school lunch hour Tuesday, slit her throat, slashed her arms with a box-cutter, and left her to bleed to death.

The grisly slaying at an elementary school in southern Japan sent shockwaves through the community, leaving many asking how such a tragedy could occur.

The body of Satomi Mitarai, 12, was found by a teacher after the girl who attacked her returned to class in bloody clothes. The teacher called police.

Mitarai died of blood loss after being slashed in the neck and arms with a retractable knife, police said.

Sasebo, Japan, Jun. 6 (UPI) -- The 11-year- old schoolgirl who killed a classmate conducted a survey on a Web site about whether others would be willing to kill their friends.

Investigators said the girl, who cannot be named because of her age, had a morbid fixation with the story, made into a movie, titled "Battle Royale," that tells of junior high classmates forced to kill each other until only one remains.

The Japanese image boards are having a field day with this, churning out porn and cutesy mascot artwork based on this murder.
