Thread: Thunder Force V (PSX) or Ikaruga (GC)

  1. Thunder Force V (PSX) or Ikaruga (GC)

I haven't played either game, but both look great. I think I can get either one for about $20, but I don't want to purchase both. I prefer horizontal shooters to vertical, but I've heard so much love for Ikaruga.

Which should I purchase? And is there another PSX, PS2 or GC shooter I should get instead?

I'd go for Thunder Force 5...

and I can think of plenty of Saturn and Dreamcast shooters you should be getting =X

I think Shikigami no Shiro was released on the PS2... I'd definitely recommend that (even if you get the Mobile Light Force 2 version of it).

  3. I've always been a vertical guy myself, so my vote goes to Ikaruga...

Get Strikers: 1945 for the PS as well.

Both are good games, but Ikaruga is a step (or two) above TF5. Assuming the GC version is as good as the DC version.

  5. Only $20 each?! Buy both man!

  7. Ikaruga.

TF5 just doesn't make the grade, especially not on PSone. Cheap deaths aplenty.

Don't forget that the US release of Strikers 1945 is actually 1945 2. Still a good game, but I have an irrational and all-encompassing love for 1945. It's SO GOOD.

    I'll second that.

  9. I could never get into TFV. And the PS port is weak. Ikaruga is still an excellent game, even if some burnt out on it because it was treated like the shmup messiah.

I know some would disagree, but I think TFV has really been trumped by Border Down anyway. It's aged some. Moreso than it's genesis counterparts.

Here's a progression of my face the day I received DC Ikaruga in the mail, over the course of the 3 hours or so that I played that day:
