Thread: Sci-Fi Show reccomendation

  1. lol! I remember that episode. I liked the holosweet episodes with the self conscious hologram. Nog and Jake made a lot of good B stories and I liked it when Worf came back into the fold. It was different... it wasn't about exploring so much as the operations and life of a portion of the galaxy.

  2. I should add, in the bit where I talk about how Babylon 5 has "amazing" plot twists, I mean it has plot "tie ups" that always either make you think to yourself "Ohhhh neat, that makes so much sense!" or that make your head spin. But almost always a combination of both, how rare is that? And the show has great lasting appeal, because after re-watching older episodes, you will "discover" little clues to 'whammo' plot twists that happen later on which you saw/heard the first time.

Unlike shows like Alias which have much looser, pre-written arcs, Babylon 5 doesn't just throw out surprises for the "zing" sake of it. Like I said, when something explosive happens it always makes perfect sense. The neat thing is J. Michael Straczynsci had a two-way "trap door built in for each character" so that when an actor/actress would maybe get out of control and have to be fired or leave the show unexpectedly, he would just film their alternate "trap door fate" before they left the show so no major damage was done to the arc.

Can anyone give me a rundown of what FireFly is about, and what channel it comes on?

My hate for Farscape (well not hate, just not like) probably stems from this. Nobody really knows about Firefly. But when you go from Firefly to Farscape something doesn't transfer. The characters seem fake and silly, the storylines and directing are too fast, and the overall product seems a knotch below.

And it's true. Wait until this Summer, bud. Serenity the movie is coming to theatres. It's going to be a huge movie about Firefly that Joss Whedon is directing himself, so I can't wait for that. Now that I'm thinking about this, it's only about 3 months away. Where the hell are the trailers?

It's great. The camera work and directing is amazing on the show, and the story and characters are well thought out and interesting. The story is that the Alliance, inhabitants of the inner ring of planets in a particular galaxy, has waged war on the other planets for resources, land, people, power, riches, etc. A few soldier, the rebels (also called Browncoats because they wear brown) try to fight the Alliance and put up a valiant effort, but fail. The star of Firefly, Captain Reynolds, is one of these browncoats. His first officer Zoe is also a browncoat who was under his command during the war. The alliance owns everything, and they look for work on the outer planets.

Technology is scarce and people are often underworked and educated with all of the talented ones and technology used on the inner planets of the Alliance. Him and his crew take onboard a doctor and his fugitive sister and help them out while going about their business of making money.

It's such an awesome show. They avoid a lot of the cheese other series stick with (Farscape), and bring a touch of class to sci-fi. Check it out, you won't be sorry.

  6. Thumbs Up Firefly

It's a "western in space" by Buffy creator Joss Whedon. Besides having a distinctive look and feel, all the characters are delightfully quirky and the dialog is terrific. It was on Fox before it got cancelled thanks to handling so inept it almost looked like they were trying to kill their own show. They showed the pilot episode last, so no character introductions for the audience until after the series was already cancelled. They moved the timeslot around, and they pre-empted it for other shows, although I can't remember what now. No wonder it never found an audience; it's audience couldn't find it! Buy the DVD set on Amazon or elsewhere; it's super cheap and worth every penny.
    Stay down!

It was pushed back to September. The studio didn't want it coming out too close to Episode 3.

  8. Well, if anything, you ought to watch Battlestar Galactica.
    It is surprisingly good.
And, yes, I am talking about Battlestar Galatica.
Although, I never got to watch Firefly, but, I know Whedon's good, so I might give it a watch.

  9. quick update: on Space: Above and Beyond DVD

Click here for the same thing i quoted. In its official form.

You've heard the rumors that Space: Above and Beyond will be coming to DVD, and... well... it's not here. Good news though; it is coming, and it's coming very soon - this summer.

Space: Above and Beyond is a title that Best Buy will have an exclusive on for a period of time, much like Tru Calling: Season 2 (which has vanished from the BB website for an unknown reason), and some titles from other studios. After this exclusive period ends we'll see it at for sale at other retailers, so if you don't have a Best Buy in your area then don't panic, you'll get the set. Since this title is an exclusive, information may be difficult to obtain until it's announced for sale elsewhere, but we'll do some digging and report whatever we find.

We've been teased by rumors for years, but this is finally happening!
doesn't seem really concrete, and so far this is the only place that's mentioned it.

Ships get carved up like turkey.

And best of all, no awful, huffy voiced three range emotion acting from Avery Brooks. Don't get me wrong, I used to enjoy DS9 but B5 really spoils you for good sci fi.
Little know fact, one of B5's main writers, also wrote for Jayce and the Wheeled Warriors.
