Thread: Sci-Fi Show reccomendation

  1. if it ever comes out Space: Above & Beyond was one of my favorite sci-fi shows. It had a series ending cliffhangar that was never resolved as well Another underrated Chris Carter show. Bonus: porn star Ashlyn Gere guest starred as an evil android on the show.

I never mentioned the special effects.

And yes, there is. I pointed out what was wrong. In many of the high paced action sequences things happen in two second shots, not giving the viewer enough time to comprehend what's going on before moving forward. In one episode they were in a space station with automatic controls which shot imposing enemies (with a weapon). The system was 'down' and Brianna brought the system up at the very time Criton needed it up.

But the director never clearly showed the advancement of the system being purged of its blight. This, coupled with the face that the shot immediately cut to the guns out and firing at the enemy caused poor pacing in the scene.

Now, this could've been due to the guns not being able to move. Some props are hard to work with, but it was still a bad directorial choice.

Which is the same reason why Farscape is as good as it is.
I said the directing was dodgy at some points in Farscape, not that the entire series belong in a toilet.

    No way.

First off, Avery Brooks is the worst actor on the planet, a wooden chair could deliver a better performace than him. Then there's the fact that every other episode centers around Quark and his cronies. Quark is such an obnoxious waste of time, it's infuriating to watch this show and have to spend half of an episode on his lame misadventures. It's almost as bad as Voyager, and it's holodeck overload, but at least some interesting episode come out it. In that show the holodeck goes nuts and locks people inside world war 2, in Ds9 we get an entire episode about Quark's mom and her clothes.
Quark was the homely representative of the DS9, in all it's mishap glory. It's where people got together and where the team blew off steam. Quark was never meant to be a liked character, he's the epitome of Ferringe. He's coniving, manipulative and corrupt. He's the opposite of Oddo and why the two played off one another so well.

Secondly, there weren't a lot of episodes that directly involved Quark. There were the same amount that involved him as the other character (O'Brien, The Doctor). And your opinion of Brooks is noted, although ultimately forgotten. His acting in the flashback episode where he believed everything was fake and being written by someone in the 30's was outstanding and extremely compelling acting.

And then there's all that garbage psuedo religion they added in for the hell of it. That is stupidest, and most pointless garbage ever in a series, ever. Even worse than all the idiotic tom foolery that takes place in every episode of Voyager. Not to mention that almost every actor sucks as much as the captain does. The doctor, odo, and whatever that annoying alien that odo likes with the manly short hair is named, are all extremely annoying actors. The only worthwhile people on that show are Colm Meany and Michael Dorn, not surprisingly, O'brien and Worf can't help but be awesome, given their background. This show is bad, Babylon 5 bad.
All of the actors you mentioned are esteemed for their work on Broadway and oversea's film. You have no taste. It seems like you didn't take the time to understand the characters, much like I did with SG-1 before realizing I was being an idiot.

Man, that was a lot more nerding out than I intended to do.
It's cool. Nothing is 'malicious' here. Just good discussion. And we're on a board dedicated to gaming... nerding it up happens a lot. By which I mean every single post.

Also, I think it should be noted that I'm not hating on Farscape. I like the show, and think it was miraculous that someone tried to be as crazy as that show did. But at the same time I'm not going to ignore the flaws of a series just because I like it.

  3. Chalk another vote up for SG-1 and Farscape. SG-1 should be watched from the beginning, if possible. It's modern-day military meets Sci-Fi. The actors have grown into their characters and given them true life. There are instances between O'Neill and Daniel Jackson that are just so damned...HUMAN, that it really makes the characters seem real. The more you watch the show, the more you care about the characters. I can't say enough good things about the show. The most enjoyable and easy to get into sci-fi show of my 30 years.

Farscape is a different animal entirely. You really need to watch it from the 1st episode on. The characters develop and change as the series progresses, and, like B5 or DS9, you lose out on many things if you don't enjoy the whole ride. The first time I watched, I was like, "What the hell?" I missed out until Season 3 when they did "Farscape: Undressed" or whatever the newbie catch-up show was. My wife and I started watching all the repeats until we were caught up. The overall story is great, the characters are unique, the situations the crew finds themselves in range from obscure, to funny, to tense, to tragic. The fact that SCIFI canceled the series with no notice to the producers of the show because their bitch of a president would rather spend the Farscape budget on green runny diarrhetic shit like Decoys and John Edwards and Boa vs. Python pisses me off to no end. If you sit down and watch the whole series, you will be rewarded.

Another log for the fire, Babylon 5. It's another "Watch it from the beginning or be lost" show. I didn't get into it until season4, and started catching up from there. Once I was hooked, that was it for me. My wife and I watched it religiously. I even got to me Jerry Doyle at the last E3 in Atlanta (he's just as much a card in real life as his character was on the series). Very epic series with good characters, and great effects and makeup for the time it was produced.

Every single one of these series is very different from the others, but all very enjoyable. Btw, the new season of SG-1 starts July 9th, and the spin-off series starts July 16th, I believe.

One more thing: "Window of Opportunity" on SG-1 is the single most fun (and funniest) episode of any sci-fi show ever.
Never under any circumstance scrutinize the mastication orifice of a gratuitous herbivorous quadruped.

Oh, definately. Another cool horror show that Fox dumped on. Very cool premise and atmosphere.

Millenium went for 3 seasons, with 2nd being the best (many wonderful episodes), and 3rd being the worst as Carter and Co tried to turn it into lame Xfiles clone

He's also an extremely irritating character that gets far more screen time than he deserves.

Even though the A. story might of been something else, the B. side story was almost always Quark related.

    Brooks is incapable of acting.

That may be so, but the characters they play, in DS9, all suck, or at least the way they portray them is the problem. The doctor has this obnoxious tone and inflection in his voice that I can't stand, Kira is a constant annoyance, and Oddo, well, I just don't like him.

I will give DS9 this, the episode Trials and Tribulations in which the DS9 crew went back to Kirk's time was super awesome, and I give them a lot of credit for it.

    Brimstone
On a similar note, check out Good vs. Evil or G vs. E, which was kind of like Brimstone, but waaaaay better.

  6. You have nothing to back up your arguements. You cite nothing. Like the Brooks issue... just saying something sucks with no examples is pointless. You don't like the show, but you don't come across as having no solid, valid excuses to not like it other than you just don't.

DS9 is an amazing show that this guy may miss out on because of bad advice.

He's also an extremely irritating character
You're not supposed to like Quark. He's sniveling.

That's basically your reason for all of it.

i agree. i loved that show.

I make generalities because no specific scenes need to be cited because, every scene, in every episode, in which Brooks is in always comes off as stilted and wooden. It doesn't matter if he's having a minor talk with his son or in a life and death battle with Gul Dukat, the fact that the man is a lousy actor is plain as day.

I just found out there is going to be a new four hour Farscape miniseries this October called Peacekeeper Wars, which should be cool. And they say that if does well there may be more Farscape related stuff made. I'd like to see how they're going to resolve that cliff hanger.

He has a soulful cander and performed well in a leadership role. He also did outstanding work in several episodes, one of which I mentioned already above. When he broke out in anger or rage on the series, he did so with authority, the authority his character was branded to have. I fail to see where this is coming from.

Why don't they just uncancel the damn thing.

  10. Uh-oh Babylon 5

There is not nearly enough love for Babylon 5 in this thread. This was an epic, well-crafted show. Just do yourself a favor and skip the pilot movie where someone attempts to assassinate the Vorlon ambassador ("The Gathering"). It was excrable. Corny plot, lame dialog, and ugly makeup. The real series begins with "Midnight on the Firing Line". Start there and never look back.
