Thread: Sci-Fi Show reccomendation

  1. Okay, so the official recommendations are this:

    - Stargate SG-1
    - Farscape
    - Babylon 5
    - Deep Space 9

  2. farscape wins it for me. just ordered season 1 from deepdiscount.
    thanks for the suggestions.
and the rousing debate. will check into Stargate sometime in the future.
    maybe bab 5 as well.

for the record, i stopped enjoying Buffy post season 3 though the later seasons had a few good eps here and there.

also i have seen a good bunch of DS9 episodes, enough so that it makes me hesitant to purchase the DVD sets. i did enjoy the show muchly, and liked many of the space battles. sometimes the theatrics of the acting got in the way, and i didnt really enjoy the final episode, but overall it was a great change of pace for Star Trek. Probably the most consistently good ST series of the bunch. however the final episode of ST:TNG rules all things. unfortunatly, the box sets are cost prohibitive too...

  3. ha, eat THAT Regus! (just kidding)

Anyway, I think you'll be happy with Farscape or SG-1. SG-1 is cheap enough. I'm not sure how expensive Farscape is, but I heard that the DVD sets were like 200 each (around the cost of the other Star Trek series). But there's only a couple of them. Luckily for me I can get DS9 at cost from my brother, which is only about 110 Canadian dollars.

Here's hoping it's cheaper for you in the States.

Also, try Futurama. It's not drama, but it's awesome sci-fi.

  4. I never got the chance to watch too much of it, but from the episodes I did see SG-1 was pretty good.

    This is truth.

It's very possible to create a character you aren't supposed to like that isn't so annoying it makes people like me not want to watch the show at all. If their intent was to make him grating as hell, they succeeded to the point where I'd rather just change the station and watch something else, and that seems rather counter-productive to me.

Personally, I couldn't stand to watch DS9. I tried numerous times, some on my own because I'd heard good things and other times urging from friends, but it just wasn't good enough to spend a time slot on.

  5. I guess rich war plots involving new technologies shot in a well developed story that spans almost the entire series isn't captivating enough. Try watching it from season 3 on (in some sort of order).

    It really isn't.

When said story is delivered by boring, wooden characters and constantly interrupted by trivial annoying matters, no, it really isn't. The primary focus always seemed to be on the characters and I didn't care about any of them. I've seen about 10+ episodes and the only strong feeling I got was wondering what else was on.

I would, but I've got other series, novels, and games to go through that I know I'll like before I devote days to something that I sampled and didn't enjoy. Maybe one day, after I've also gone through SG-1 and Farscape (which aren't even on my near-future list yet, and I liked those).

  7. I used to hate Deep Space 9 with a passion. That was before I actually sat down and watched a couple of episodes without scutinizing them to the point that I couldn't enjoy it no matter what. The characters are 'wooden', and the story derived nothing yet it won lots of Emmy awards and was nominated for something like 35 of them over the 7 years it aired.

You have the right to your opinion, I guess. There is no but's about that.

It obviously did a lot right to recieve this acclaim.

I never said the general public had taste.

  9. i will have to agree that every time avery brooks spoke sounded like he was delivering a soliloquoy. and wooden dialogue is generally a fault of Star Trek really. To be honest, i think DS9 was the least guilty of it outside of brooks, given that DS9 probably had naturalist acting of the bunch, so brooks was a nice foil for the rest of the cast. and Quark is neat. though i rarely watch enterprise. and i have seasons 1-3 of Futurama actually, forgot to mention.

I remember that show. Didn't it only run for like 12 eps?
