Wow. What a thread.
First off, supporting bootleggers is about as stupid a thing as you can do. For christ's sake, play the ROM instead if you have too. And if you have to get the cart, go MVS cart only as the most expensive that gets is barely $100, and usually only $30-60 for great games.
Ports of Neo-Geo games generally are not as good as the original. Remember, these are ports of original software, software that was designed specifically for the NG hardware. Only the most recent ports have been comparable, like MS3 for XBox. Last Blade on Dreamcast was decent as was Mark of the Wolves.
And the comments about neo-geo.com? Guess I shouldn't mention that I'm not only a member but a moderator there, so I must be the king of idiots and also completely insane.
But oh the drama....

Only now that SNK is finally killing off the Neo-Geo line would I even think about buying anything related to the system. I wouldn't have to worry about my money continuing to support something that should have ended years ago. It was getting to the point where supporting SNK was just as bad as supporting the bootleggers. If SNK were to do some classic Neo compilations on the XBox/PS2, I'd definately support them on that.
The only thing the XBox/PS2 ports of NG games lack is the "true lo-res". Other than that, arguing about the XBox port of Metal Slug 3 "losing the feel" is laughable. It's like patting yourself on the back for having spent $150-300 for your copy of MS3.
Neo is dead. Play the roms.

lithium, you've got a good impression of the scene but most people on neo-geo.com probably agree with you. You should come over...Originally Posted by lithium
To myself buying a neo geo was like purchasing a house only it wouldn't change responsibility from boy to man but would rack up some serious dollar for the experience. However I waited and picked up a japanese AES for less than an x-box with four games and was suprised to see that the system didn't let my expectations down. No bitter tast in my pocket. As for system conversions anyone who has played snk vs capcom chaos on either mvs or aes can say that the snk playmore PS2 is a sloppy port and would say it compared to that of streetfighter 2 on the amiga 500+. KOF 2002 was a little better as a snk playmore PS2 attempt but samurai showdown V was a whole new gaming experience than the AES title(slow, control totally different bar from controller type). As for emulation sure they work great but some have flaws for instance Waku Waku 7 but the underlining that free is great sure. I feel I play games because I want too and for me 2d rules for one on one beat em ups. Samurai showdown 2 is still great in my heart as is streetfighter 3rd strike on PS2. Though the price now the same streetfighter 3rd strike is the best port I have ever seen from arcade(the board CPS111). Metal slug 3 for X box is another fantastic port but doesn't nearly mimic it is better. No free nebula 2.24 rom working kinda good but a fantastic greatness in a port that any next gen machine should be able too graciously absorb. I love the neo geo for what it is an old machine with great 2d games, but I also love stout. Guiness is my personal choice and no other stout compares I'm not a pedantic but surely the analogy is with this. P.S to quote is to have said somethinglol
