Thread: doom 3 - official

  1. I've got to get a new rig and soon, I'm dying to play this. Does anyone know a good site to order a computer from.
    PSN = knarlockk
    Steam= kevinb150

  2. I know you didn't just say that and then write Silent Hill was scarier.
    Silent Hill isnt scarey because of its monsters, its scarey cause its a total mind fuck. "Silent Hill still got it beat in scares - but they are totally different games and have totally different approaches to scare you." But hey, something like that is totally opinion, so what works for you, might not work for me.

    Multiple types of zombies, Imps, Pinkies, Hellknights, spider-creatures, winged infants, Lost Souls, Maggots, Revanants, and those tube-arm soldiers are all regular enemies. What was the last FPS or horror game you played that had more enemy types?
    80% of the levels' enemies has been that fireball throwing dude, and after owning his ass every other minute for the past 4+ hours of playtime, its getting old. He stopped being scarey 5 minutes after i first saw him.
    NowPlaying: Battlefield series . DarkSouls . MGS collection . Cap+SNK fighters . AceCombat series . ArmoredCore series

    Looking at an Imp isn't scary, walking into a room and knowing one might crawl out of any hole and leap from any nook at any moment is what's scary, especially when it works. Turning on my flashlight at the exact moment a Maggot jumped into face is just plain frightening. Silent Hill is creepy and wigs me out but has never outright scared me.

    They both take the same approach, except I've had battles in Doom III in total darkness where I can't see anything and it's just messed with me, that's some on-edge stuff right there.

    I know, I just thought it was really funny that you complained about buildup to the same enemies over and over when Silent Hill is practically nothing but buildup for the entire game and there's usually only like three enemies ever with an additional one added for an area once in a great while.

    As for Doom 3, I really can't get enough of this game. I am in the Center Communications Station, and the game just keeps getting better.

  5. ATTN: anybody in the Austin area who has this game

    Can I come play it? pretty please??

  6. Yeah I know it's opinion but if such a stupid game like Silent Hill scares you and Doom 3 doesn't, you have mental problems :P

    Like what MechDeus said, the creatures are hardly scary themselves, it's the approach they have on you.

  8. Ok, Spent more time with the game last night, doing more exploration, talking to people, reading emails, listening to logs and opening the lockers. Pretty cool stuff, and it help you immerse into the game's world.

    Then all shit broke loose, and zombies started to jump from all the direction, and man, some of the moments were quite scary. Especially when zombies shuffle from some packet of darkness right in front of your nose, even when you checked it a second ago, and it was empty. Really freaked out me and dj one time.

    Once you get used to the environments, it all starts to look better than initial impressions, and monster models are awesome. Blood splatter fxs are cool as well, and I love cool touches as Imp death animation, as they burn out after you kill them. Nice.

    Sure, the fact that you have to constantly switch between flashlight and weapons, is a bit annoying, but it also helps to raise the level of tension, as you see the monster shuffling or running towards you, and you struggle to get the right gun

    The sound is awesome. Screams and moans on the radio, whispers and bangs around you. Quite moans that zombies make before jumping at you from the darkness. Coolness.

    Shotgun wielding zombie marines are annoying bitches though, but at least unlike FarCry you have save anywhere option, which I love in FPS.

    I am still not very far in the game (only got back to Mars City from the underground installation), but so far its a great experience.

    Both games use different approach on how to scare the player:

    In Doom 3 most of the scares are what can be called "BOO" moments. Things jump at you from the dark, things appear in spaces where they werent a moment before. It also has some psychological scares as well, as loud music, scary sounds and screams in the dark, but not on the level of weirdness that Silent Hill games operate. In this regard D3 is closer to RE games. In fact it can be called RE-like game in FPS setting with better controls

    In SH its all about creepiness and mindfuck weirdness. Things are weird and dont make sense. You are in the dark, and you know something is out there, but things dont jump at you to cause cheap scare, you discover weird creatures by your self, and this sense of horrific discovery what freaks you out. At least this is how it works for me. Not to say that SH doesnt use cheap scares methods, but it relies on them less that say RE games.

  10. How is the music? I loved Bobby Prince's score for the originals. How does this stack up?

    Is Bobby Prince still around, btw? I know he was an elderly guy (70s) when Doom came out.
