"The Hollywood Reporter says that Lions Gate Family Home Entertainment will kick off its much-anticipated series of animated made-for-video movies starring Marvel comic-book characters with The Avengers.

The first installment in an eight- to 10-picture deal with Marvel Enterprises, the 66-minute film will feature a cadre of Marvel's most popular characters, including Captain America, the Hulk, Iron Man, Thor, Giant Man and Wasp.

The animated feature, based on the Marvel Comics series "The Ultimates," is still in the script phase. The complete film is expected to be out on DVD in early 2006. "

The only really good animated superhero stuff I enjoyed was the Batman series when it was first on a decade or so ago. I was hoping years ago that Justice League would live up to it, but, oh well. Here's hoping for a new golden age of superhero animation.

Did you watch season 2? It was rather fantastic.

As for the video; 2006? Might be cool but way too far away to care.

  4. Wait a minute, isn't the Ultimates a little heady for animated fare? They should really go with the poppy, campy Avengers, rather than dumbing down something great and disappointing its fans.

    No.

Being animated doesn't mean it's for children, though I do share your concerns with how the Ultimates will be watered down for a straight-to-video, meant-for-children release.

Anyway, they're doing it for the money, not for the fans.
