I assume that those who would speak out against book burning would also not buy edited video games, since it is essentially the same damn thing. This is why I refuse to buy "white blood" ports.
No way, you can't just let him and his group get away with this without any scrutiny. I'd say that as much (negative) attention should be given to this as possible, so that if anyone else gets any bright ideas along these lines, they remember this and how stupid it made this guy and his cause look to everyone.

There's a pretty big fucking world of difference between burning/banning books and changing the color of red pixels to white.
Not that I approve of either, but the former is a hugely more significant problem than the latter.

Like I said, one nutjob in Iowa who wants to gather up a few books and throw them in the trash while he lights candles to "symbolically burn" them is of no significance whatsoever and its not a problem at all.Originally Posted by sleeveboy
Even if the entire state of Iowa was for this guy, that would still be no more than 1.1% of the population. Theres absolutely no way any of this would ever pick up steam and end up influencing the entire of the American public or American policy.
And like the article said, crazed religious groups have been burning books in America for hundreds of years, and if anything book burning has become less accepted as time goes on.
Besides, the novelty of this article is not the book burning itself (which is, once again, not new), but the fact that the municipiality would not allow it to happen.
Where is censorship and oppression of art here? This guy has no power. There are no laws saying that the books he chooses must be banned. Nobody's rights to read were being infringed. In fact, its this guy's right to say that these books are unclean or whatever. The city just isnt letting him burn them. Also, book burning, and other forms of forced censorship and oppression of art, are just sickening.
Let freedom ring.

the man is retarded, but he should have the right to be retarded as long as his retardation doesn't effect others negatively.
Whats next? You guys going to tell me I can't burn me a mess of flags on the fourth of July?
He doesn't have an unlimited right to burn books in public, no.Originally Posted by diffusionx
My post above, btw, spoke of the problem in general terms. Of course it isn't a problem if some random nutjob burns books in a trashbin, but it is a problem if some locally-controlled school board burns or bans every copy of Huck Finn in the county.

When they start burning book stores, I'll take it serious. Otherwise, people should be free to do what they want with whatever they own (so long as it doesn't infringe on anyone elses rights), and saying different makes you look like more of a intolerant reactionary than I think you want to be.
I completely agree. If they bought the books they should do with them as they please. Though, that doesn't mean they aren't ignorant people.Originally Posted by MVS
In several cases groups have taken materials from the Library or from Public schools and staged book-burnings. This I DON'T agree with as it isn't theirs to burn in the first place, and is causing a disadvantage for those whom only have access to that outlet for that knowledge.
My point is this: Just because you have the right to do something, doesn't stop it from making you look like an asshole.
Case in point: The KKKs right to spread hate as long as they don't invoke violence.
See, now in theory I understand where people who are for flag burning are coming from. They feel they should be allowed to descrate the flag as a method of celebrating free speach.Originally Posted by Lobo
From a personal perspective I think these people are nut-jobs. Why would anyone want to destroy the US flag? It just serves to make you look like an idiot. Nobody takes you seriously and your point will most definitely NOT get across.
If they made a law that stated only Black people could say nigger, you KNOW there would be non-black people fighting for their right to say it based on principle, but what a stupid thing to spend energy on.
And don't give me that "slippery slope" nonsense. Using the "slippery slope" excuse just serves to highlight the fact that you don't understand the subject matter. Using that retarded theory, for each liberal law that is passed we go down the slope of becoming crap-flinging monkeys with no laws, and when a conservative law gets passed we start to become "farenheit 451". Puh-leeze. Use your head.

Look, it's pretty simple.
In theory it's bad to burn books, it just doesn't reflect well on the person doing the burning. It's not illegal and shouldn't be. So long as they buy the books their burning, no big deal except for the small-minded intolerance bit, which can be fairly aggravating.
However, the second they think they've got a movement going and can ban stuff like this from libraries and then on to the bookstores it's time to slap the little bitches back to their dark, miserable corner, with a few kicks to the head to remind them to stay there.
Same for flags, really. Burn 'em if you want, we aren't running out any time soon, but the problem here is in reverse. People want to pass laws against burning them when really, it's not a big problem. It really all depends on what you find sacred, I guess.
