Thread: Ren and Stimpy

  1. Screw anything post-Spumco, really.

  2. The set for season three is coming out on June 28, according to TVShowsonDVD. - http://www.tvshowsondvd.com/newsitem.cfm?NewsID=3267

    Back in late February we were first to tell you that more Ren & Stimpy DVDs were coming from Paramount Home Entertainment, and now the studio has officially announced the next release. We told you that it was going to include episodes from the 3rd and 4th seasons, and have a weird titles that mentioned a half-season. Turns out our informant was just a bit off, but had the idea right: the actual title is The Ren and Stimpy Show - Season 3 and a Half-ish.

    And just as we told you back then, the street date is June 28th. The demented cartoon from John Kricfalusi that kick-started the animation craze is presented as a 3-disc collectible box set containing 17 episodes. Join Ren and Stimpy in their bizarre and gross world that features the oddly lovable duo in some outlandish situations coupled with hilarious jokes. The Ren and Stimpy Show - Season 3 and a Half-ish features the guest voice of comedian Gilbert Gottfried and consists of amusing episodes combined with the gross-out humor that became popular when the show first premiered on Nickelodeon in 1991.

    Specs are: Full screen format, Dolby Digital English Stereo, running time 373 minutes. Look for extras like a Commentary by John K. and original animation team. The discounted price in stores is going to be around $30 (around CAN$40 in Canada). Stay tuned for box art; we'll have that for you just as soon as we can!
    It really saddens me to see Ren and Stimpy credited with jump-starting the animation craze, given that the Simpsons did it years before.

  3. Fuck Kricfalusi and his shitty DVDs.

    The Simpsons was a totally different beast though. It was more or less a network sitcom, but animated. It was a team of writers that couldn't care less if the show was a cartoon or live action, who worked seperate from any artists, all of whom were unimportant and replaceable. Ren and Stimpy revived the artist-created cartoon which was written and storyboarded by cartoonists, something that hadn't been seen since the hay day of looney tunes. It was a revival of sorts in a way that the Simpsons simply wasn't, as great and as influencial of a show as it was.

    The Simpsons was more influencial on a corporate level (I don't mean that as a bad thing, mind you). It was this hugely profitable pop-culture phenomenon that opened up the doors for animation in prime time, something which hadn't been seen since Rocky and Bullwinkle. However, it did not inspire a generation of independent animators the way Ren and Stimpy did. It was a revival for animation as an art and not just as a commodity.

  6. Frogacuda, good points. I just kind of viewed what was said in the piece as being the same statement made on a VH1 special on cartoons, where it was stated that Ren and Stimpy jumpstarted primetime animation, which is hilarious, given that R&S never appeared on prime time when it was on Nick. Ah, the joy of the many errors within that one VH1 show.

    John K. chat revealing that an "ultimate" set will come out, the APC eps will be hitting DVD, and that there may be new eps coming right to DVD. Some tits in this link, so it's not entirely work safe -

    For the ultimate set, he hinted that he'll be doing the art for it, and that animatics will be on it. Nothing was said on the uncut eps making it.

  8. The ultimate box set is now official
    http://www.tvshowsondvd.com/newsitem.cfm?NewsID=3739 -
    It seems Spike and Paramount are planning to release an "Ultimate" box set for The Ren & Stimpy Show. This set will contain:

    * The 1990-1991 SPUMCO series
    * The 1992-1994 series
    * The 2002 John K Series

    The packaging mentions the following extras:

    * Interviews
    Meet some of the top Spumco artists!
    * Animatics
    See previews of these future Ren and Stimpy specials! ("George Liquor's Wilderness Adventure" and "Life Sucks!")
    * He Hog The Atomic Pig pilot
    See a cartoon so funny that every network in town refuses to give it to you!
    * Magic Fun Booklet!
    Filled with artist profiles, drawing info and thrilling trivia and activities!

    This information came from packaging posted to the The Members of the Loyal Order of Stupids website, in a thread which has since been taken down. Thankfully, one of the members there posted the artwork to his site so you can get a glimpse at the early artwork.

    The package notes "The 1990-1991 SPUMCO series. John K. Classics! Actually Uncensored this time!!" which makes it sound as though they'll add the missing footage from the first set back into the episodes.

    We spoke with our friends at Paramount and were told they'll release the set on November 8. Of course that date may move (it hasn't been announced yet), but that's where it's placed now.
    I'm glad I waited to get the R & S set, although it's a massive fuck you to anyone who bought the original set.

    Hell yeah, it is! That really pisses me off. I paid for uncensored, and I didn't get it. Plus, I wanted the new Adult Party episodes and it looks like I will have to buy the Ultimate set to get them. I hate companies double dipping, fuck them.
