Thread: Are you satisfied with the current generation overall?

  1. Not satisfied IMO last gen was stronger. Today’s games aren’t close to great tittles like FF7, Alundra, LOL Ocarina of Time, Castlevania SOTN, and Vagrant Story.

I need someone here to help me

Great titles are still being made, just more from the US, Canada, and Europe than any previous gen.

  3. Yes, it's been an excellent generation that's provided some of my favourite games ever. The Xbox hardware is one of the best designed systems ever - I absolutely love the custom soundtracks & hard drive. The Dreamcast before it was a marvel as well - I miss VMUs. The scope of games has increased dramatically, things I used to dream about are now commonplace, and we're seeing the emergence of games that truly qualify as art.

My personal ranking of the eras:

    1. 16 bit
    2. DC-Current
    3. 8 bit
    4. 32 bit
    5. Pre-8bit/classic
    -Kyo

  4. In a word, no.

Games are just not as fun to me as they used to be. The ability to do "realistic" worlds and such has made genres which I once to used to really like become quite boring (FPSes in particular).

Stringing video games with pop culture has also made experiences less fun. The Need for Speed series has become about "bling bling" and "street rep" instead of actual exotic cars and things like fun handling. A waste of good talent.

I think developers are biting off more than they can chew by trying to be ambitious because they want to go in a new direction, and failing IMO. 3D games are replacing 2D games, and while I don't inherently dislike 3D games, most third-person games are quite garbage because of camera limitions and trying to convey a "realistic" experience, despite the fact that I play games to be in an unbelivable world.

  5. Heck yes, I'd explain, but its been explained thoroughly higher how games are more entertaining now then they used to, and the Nostalgia fever people have been having for ages now is starting to fade with the great stuff coming out this gen. Even though I was a kid in the old SNES / Gen/ PSX days, I would have bought all of the consoles if they caught my interest as much as this gens consoles do. Im just drowning in a bunch of great games, its hard not to say yes to Neo's poll.

  6. Absolutely! Yes! Yes! Yes!

There is no question that this gen has been a great one. Especially when including the Dreamcast. As it was mentioned, 3D finally came into its own. You can definitely liken it to 8-bit vs 16-bit 2D. The shift was large back then, and the shift was large now. I really can't see another shift feeling as drastic as these two; it looks like from this point out, it will only be a gradual one. Now it will be about adding finesse and optimizing. Yet who knows what the distant future holds.

I think that Japanese gaming is becoming stagnant, overall. There are still some gems out there, but look at how Ubi Soft is performing right now, and EA are doing some great things as well. There's a lot more great gaming going on in the west right now, it's rather remarkable. I haven't bought nearly as many Japanese created games in this gen (post DC, of course) as in the past. And while this is surprising to me, I don't regret it one bit.

I don't know what this forecasts for the future, but hopefully with the advent of newer, more powerful technology, the creativity will keep up.

All that said, though, I'm one happy gamer. If I only got Halo (and I got a hell of a lot more) this would still be a great Generation of gaming.

  7. Super Happy

  8. Totally satisifed.

This is the first generation since the 16-bit era where I've played a multi-player game on a regular basis.

  9. I'm happy at the moment. A lot of must have games are coming out IMO this year, especially on the Gamecube...

There wasn't a must-have game on Gamecube last year, let alone this year.

Gamecube has seriously brought this entire generation down, with the exception of Super Monkey Ball and Metroid Prime.
