The way the name came into being was pretty much just circumstance.
During early exploration, some voyageurs met a chief somewhere who was telling them about something called "kanata". They thought he was talking about the land they were in, but he was actually talking about his village down the road. The voyageurs started using the name, which they had misheard as "Canada", and it stuck.
Anyways, ya... I know we call alot of countries by their anglicised names. Alot are quite different from their original form.
Germany = Deutschland
Sweden = Sverge
Finland = Suomi
Japan = Nihon/Nippon
Korea = Hanguk
etc...
and Australians Pronounce their countries name "ostraya"
I don't know if any of you have actually been to Mexico but damn, stay clear of it.

Here in Toronto, the second T is slient.
In Kyoto, the second O is silent. (I found that one odd.)
Do all australians pronounce Whopper as "whapper"? Last year or so some Aussie guy came into my local burger king asking for a "whapper with cheese" and the employees busted out laughing in his face.Originally Posted by arjue
