Thread: Hero

    Thumbs Up Hero

In a surprising interview with Fangoria magazine, Tarantino revealed, that he battled with Miramax (who holds the rights to Zhang Yimou's HERO) to finally release the film (which is almost 2 years old now, and hasn't gotten ANY attention from Miramax, who already had edited the film down to 95 minutes - a version that was also shown all over Europe), and to top it, he convinced Miramax to release it in its original version, which is over 120 minutes long.

This is what Tarantino said (the entire interview will be in the April 16 Issue of Fangoria Magazine)

"And I am very proud to do that," Tarantino tells Fangoria Magazine. "I had to fight for it with Miramax. I think they lost faith in it and everything. And I thought that HERO was an absolute masterpiece, so I fought with them not to cut it. Not to bring it down, but to keep it the same length as when I saw it. And finally they agreed if I would present it. So I got in touch with Zhang Yimou and he was cool with that. Yeah, he was as happy as a clam. So that's what I am doing—it's pretty much what I did for IRON MONKEY."

  3. I have Hero on DVD and it's amazing.

Go see it for sure. It has some beautiful scenes and that is no understatement.

    PS: Shaolin Soccer was awesome.

  4. I saw the commercial and it looks fucking awesome.

Can anyone tell me a little about it? Don't give anything major away, just what it's about, the quality of the fight scenes, etc.

  5. The trailer lies. Put it that way. The american trailer that I saw is totally wrong about the movie.

Well, I can't say much without spoiling it since there are a few twists in different parts of the movie but basically he meets with a king to talk about how he killed several deadly assassins on the wanted list but then it becomes a bit different than that.

Fight scenes are amazing. Especially the one with 2 women fighting in a downfall of leaves. It is amazing!

  6. I definitely want to check it out after seeing that trailer, it totally caught me off guard when I saw it. Seems like an asian style Matrix movie set in the past or something.

I give you that fights are beautifully shot, but wire-work is overused quite a bit. Jet vs Donnie yet duel in the rain is the best fight scene in the movie. And duel at the lake is the worst.

Its a good movie, but fights in it are not its strongest point. Maybe if you dig over the top wire-work overload its ok, but it was bit too much for me.

The story is about Emperor meeting with No Name swordsman, who defeated 3 most dangerous assassins on King's list, and how the story unfolds with each character giving his own interpratation of the events, and the whole picture builds but using different colors.

As I already said above, fights are ok, if you like over the top wirework, but if not, than you might not like it that much.

I think if you understood the culture the lake fight would make a lot more sense. I don't understand it, but I liked that fight a lot.
The leaves fight was my hands down favourite. The fight with the Emperor in the green silk panels was awesome aswell.

Then again, you liked Freddy vs Jason. :P

  9. Don't mind wire work, as long as it's not overdone, or too floaty. And is Donny Yen in this movie too? Cool.

  10. There is a lot of wire work in this movie ala Crouching Tiger or Iron Monkey. Very similar.
